Moral / Ethical Dilemma

1) Check the books.
2) Check with HR.
3) Check with an accountant, you may have to pay taxes on this kind of gift.
4) Check to see if you own the right king of clothing for such an adventure.
I suggest...

5) Can you tan? I mean really? Can you?
and 6) Is she cute? :)

So, they want to fly you and your husband to Hawaii for an interview and you declined?

Find the nearest wall and smash your head against it. Repeat until you are feeling better.

DUDE do you know how freaking expensive it is to live in HI! ACK Not to mention I've lived on an island before, and if I'm going to live on an island again it's going to be New Zealand.

well the cost of living has to balance with the pay rates there, or else NOONE would be able to live there, so im sure it would be ok ;)

Hawaii is the most expensive state to live in. That's why you have to negotiate an appropriate salary after you have gone to the interview and they have offered you a job. If the absolute worst thing that could come out of it is you can't negotiate an appropriate salary and along the way you got to scuba/skydive/surf/lay on the beach in HI on someone's dime, how do you not take that trip?

Please send me their website. I'd love to float a resume for that job.

Make sure that there are 'No Strings' attached and then go for it.

lol I politely declined... in all honesty I think she wants to hire me to run her office in Honolulu. We have talked about it before. ;) She travels there every 3 weeks and she recently had a scare with ovarian cancer and wants to limit her travel time so she is seriously looking to hire someone.

Nope. She's a Swinger. Trust me. You'd find her and an over-tanned porn-addict husband with a flowered "man-wrap" a pitcher of Viagra-laced Piña Coladas waiting for you when you got there.
....So I'd say check the room for cameras and GO FOR IT! IT'S F*CKIN' HAWAII!!

I am not allowed to take items from patients as gifts. Cards are fine but anything of value is a major no no.

What constitutes something of value? For instance, if you helped a patient who happened to be an author, and the two of you had discussed that person's books, would it be inappropriate to accept a signed copy of his/her latest book (assume a jacket price of ~$30) offered as a gift?

Whether it is unethical depends on the kind of work you do, but there are easily many different circumstances in which there would be nothing unethical about accepting such an invitation.

I have been offered such invitations before, and I accepted, but the customer who made the invitation never followed through, as I expected. My experience has been that usually people who make such offers are just blowing smoke, and will not deliver if the offer is accepted.

"Junkets" are nothing new in business; but more typically the gift-giver is the vendor, and the recipient is the customer/client. Typical exceptions might be, for example, when the vendor saves the client a huge bundle on a deal, etc. What kind of business are you in, and what kind of customer is she? Oh, and what did you do (special) for her?

(P.S. - I'm late to the thread, but please add my name to the short list. :P)

Business is international trade/shipping
I'm helping her with the Singapore Ministry of Defense and importing cargo into the United States.

Nothing special in my eyes... just arranged for some meetings / tours / etc.

Coupled with the job thing in HI, the long term relationship I have with her, she knows that I take care of my customers.

I wouldnt take it. I would even tell a white lie and say it is against company policy to get out of that. My thing is you are letting a stranger into your personal life- not gonna happen. I'd rather be safe than dead.-My 0.02 cents-Caress:|

I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.

An ethical person would take the trip knowing that it probably isn't the "right" thing to do,

A moral person would know it isn't the right thing to do and stay home........................Have a good time in Hawaii!! :D:D

OK, so assuming she's not just hot for you (not that there's anything wrong with that :P), it sounds like she's just grooming/nourishing a good contact in her network (you); and there's nothing wrong with that, either, in principle. That's how good business is done all the time, of course. I think her mistake was that she went overboard - going too huge with the gift, thereby making you feel awkward enough to decline. What she probably should have done was send you something on the order of a gift certificate for a dinner for 2 at a really excellent restaurant in your area, or maybe 2 good tickets to a major league sports game... something like that - nice enough gift to get-er-done, but not so big that it's just too big.

That you even have to ask means you know it is kind of shady... even if you are doing nothing wrong, the appearance of being inappropriate is bad mojo and if the trip turned out to be out of bounds, is it worth your job?

So if you were just doing your job and assisting a customer, and the customer comes back and offers you a trip to Hawaii as a thank you - do you take it!?

Yes, given what little info you have given.

There are many reasons--which you might be withholding given you asked the question in the first place--to decline. But, there_is_such a thing of people with the means wanting to compensate for people who do extraordinary things for them. And by extraordinary, I mean actually doing ones' job and giving a shit about it. Sadly, many people do not. Sometimes it is overwhelmingly refreshing when someone actually is "just doing your job and assisting a customer", especially when one is paid by the hour or otherwise--not that you are. But,...these days lazy assholes are a given and I would rather do shit myself or compensate for competence.

I am just saying, if all else is well and you are only asking because you are being humble or something silly--take it! :P:)

I'd be very afriad of a 'conflict of interest stink' way down the road....

This IS a trip to Hawaii we're talking about.

Nah. Some people like to try to "buy" you for what they may need next time.

I'd steer wayyyyyyy clear of being put in that position.

She like trying different positions though . . . I say let her try it.:o:):)
