If I intend to use the same machine with the same drivers I cannot really see any problems, but I know there is probably a catch. Obviously programs would run a little slower, but would it even get into windows in the first place? Another problem I can see is that you would need to partition the drive and I don't think that is possible on external.. You can even boot a slimmed down version of XP off a thumb drive... If you need to backup the files boot from a Universal Boot CD (UBCD), UBCD4Win or from Clonezilla, all free software ... copy what you need to backup to the external drive, then reinstall on the internal drive.
