Windows install on external drive: Is it possible?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to install an OS on an external HD? If I intend to use the same machine with the same drivers I cannot really see any problems, but I know there is probably a catch. Obviously programs would run a little slower, but would it even get into windows in the first place?
Another problem I can see is that you would need to partition the drive and I don't think that is possible on external.. Anyone tried this?

Yes, if your bios supports it... but why?

You can just crack that external open (most cases) and plug it into your computer and volia!

You can even boot a slimmed down version of XP off a thumb drive... Its a bit of a pain in the arse to get working, but it works pretty well.

Why would you want to install to an external drive? If you need to backup the files boot from a Universal Boot CD (UBCD), UBCD4Win or from Clonezilla, all free software ... copy what you need to backup to the external drive, then reinstall on the internal drive.

Under normal circumstances, Windows won't let you install the OS to a removable device.
