That was SCARY!

Recommended Posts

Just spent the better part of a week in L.A. looking for 'assisted living' accommodations for my honey's mom.:S

If you've never been through some of those places then you probably weren't aware, as I wasn't...the horrible conditions people are often 'warehoused' in. :o

I'd heard it could be bad, but I had NO idea.

It all depends on how much you're willing to spend. There are some extremely nice facilities if you're willing to spend enough.

Understand that even a modest apartment in a facility like this located in a suburb (not Beverly Hills) with dual occupancy can still run about $5k per month.

There are several great facilities in the valley.

This is one across the street. There is a grocery store, movie theatre, restaurant, pool.. all kinds of stuff inside. Wonderful staff. :)

And therein, lies the problem...:S

We found one that's a possibility, but is about 45,000 a year for 'our' part, doable but not really practical long term.

As LisaH suggested, we'll be looking out in the valley when we go back, we need to figure something out pretty quick.

The thing I found shocking was the conditions in some of the places available to people without 'considerable resources'...you wouldn't want to put your worst enemy into one of those! :S

Be good to your kids, or you could end up in one of those places :o

Sad but true.

This was certainly a 'reality check' for me...the whole question of quality of life takes on a different meaning when you actually see how one of these old people warehouses operate.

You might try places in Hemet, CA. It's a retirement community.
The best place is the Village. http://www.thevillagehemet.com/ It has residents that are pretty much self-sufficient mobility wise that have people check in on them.
They have apartment type accommodations.
The Village provides transportation to the mall, casino and other ventures around the area. They also get lots of perks from local business.
They also have a wing or two with people that need help dressing and bathing. Their rooms are like large up-scale dorm rooms. Meals are served in a cafeteria or in their rooms. They even allow cats as pets in those wings.

Another place is Camelot. A bit too pricey for the size of the rooms, but it is nice, clean and has adequate staff.

There are a couple of other places too, but when I was there I only saw the residents that were in near-hospital type rooms and were very bed-ridden.

The reason I know of these places is from my volunteer work with the library's home-bound program.
The home bound program has been recently canceled, but I'd be happy to run books, tapes, dvds out to the Village or any of the other places.

If your mother-in-law can live on her own, but needs someone to check up on her or run errands or cook & clean there are many senior parks around too.
Cheaper, more living space, but fewer helpers on demand. Helpers are available for hire. There was a very nice lady that cooked and cleaned for another one of the library's home bound client.

We were originally looking near the area they currently live, near Hollywood, but that's just not realistic...I kind of knew that going in, but had to do the leg work to confirm it.

I hadn't thought of Hemet, I knew someone that had their folks in a place there some years back, I'll suggest we look into something on that order too.

The in-laws are 81 & 91, she's older and needs some assistance, he's healthy but doesn't want to move away from their friends and temple ect...I've caution him that it's crunch time and life IS about to change.

We will have to head back out in a week or two and continue the march, probably something we should have been doing for some time now. :|

I want to thank you guys for the PM's and the suggestions, this isn't something easily done from 1/2 way across the country! B|

There is a place called Sierra Dawn,951-925-6502, that is a nice, well maintained large mobile home park for seniors. It's pretty much independent living, but you can hire someone to clean, cook, shop and whatnot. It's around the corner from The Village too.

Hemet West is another upscale independent living place, but out west of Hemet.
Eden Roc is nice too, not as pricey. They have the voter booths there.

Hemet has a Senior Center, Senior-Olympics and a plethora of activities for the older folks. Scrabble at the library. Lawn bowling at Himmel Park.

Let me know if I can help you find care takers.

Lots of information to go through, I'll definitely look into those places both on line and in person when we go back out, also going to look out in the Valley...Thanks so much for the suggestions, at least these are more options and possibilities.

I guess I should have asked for ideas PRIOR to going out there last week, I forgot what a wonderful resource this 'community' can be! B|

Would "in home" care be an option for them? I worked at a very upscale retirement community through college and then for the corporate office after graduating. Part of our services involved home care nursing and CNAs. Just a thought. Good luck. I've seen how hard it can be for the families over the years working there.

Don't forget that you can use google street views to get an idea ahead of time too.

Any chance that you could hire in home, 24/7 caregivers and have your in laws continue to live at home? After checking out the "nursing home" scene and the nightmare that it was, we did that with my mom and dad and the quality of their final years was much better in the familiar surroundings of their own home. Overall, price wise it was slightly less expensive than the alternative.
The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

Hi T

We were discussing this very topic a couple of months ago. This is what I got second hand from the daughter about her mama's wish's

Mom wanted to be stay in a nice place and be comfortable as long as she was healty and aware of her surrounding.

However ma also said when she got to the point where she didn't recognize anyone and was unaware of her surrounding. Save the money and move her to a facilty with a " lower standard of care.":| my words " a dump"

Listen to the old folks:)

Having went through that with my Grams, sorry you have to go through it. There are some quality places out there, but it takes looking.

Either way, that sucks. I'm sorry, buddy.
