It depends on what career you plan on pursuing. An English major probably doesn't need to take calculus. However, far too many people don't have even a basic level of understanding of algebra and geometry and that simply baffles me. Their excuse is usually something like "but I'm not good at math" which in my mind is essentially saying "but I'm illiterate." I'm not talking about anything all that advanced either, just the kind of stuff you'd grossly cover in the (for me) 9th grade. I don't get it. I don't get it either. People will go to great lengths to hide the inability to read, but proudly boast, often in front of their kids, that they can't do math.
