Antonov 225

Recommended Posts

Yep, I've chartered the big boy for a hot ass shipment to Korea.

This beast will be touching down in Houston IAH this Friday. We load out on Saturday morning. I've seen the little brother the 124 before. I've never EVER seen this one except in pictures.

Hopefully I'll be able to post up some pix next week of the tour and load out.

:D

To bad I couldn't load up 500 of my closest friends and go for a jump huh?

Hell with a payload of 550,000lbs I think we could fit more then 500 on the load. B|

Jesus that is a big plane.

I would love to see a side by side comparison to a Boeing 747...

Not a side by side, but it's close enough.

The reason we've chartered the Antonov, is the 747 can't handle what we're shipping. The doors and nose load plane just doesn't have the opening we need. So the big beast is coming in to handle it.

Callsign "HeavyLift"or HLA, right?

I've worked the AN-225 through my sector before, as well as a few AN-124's that haul freight. I've never seen one in the flesh, though. Take some pics when you walk through that bad boy, the only one of its kind.

What are you shipping?

My better 1/2 got to fly that monster from IAH to EWR a few years back.

She speaks Russian and knew the PIC from when it was doing the airshow curcit years ago.

It was at Oshkosh parked nose to nose with a C-5, IIRC the capacity was almost 2X that of our at the time biggest mil-transport.

It proved to be a bit of an embarrassment for the Air Force guys, the 225 was scheduled to do a fly-by but the C-5 didn't have a tow bar to be moved out of the way...:S

No problem the Ruskies said, they moved all the light aircraft away, fired up the Antonov...hit the reversers and BACKED that hulk away from the C-5 and down the taxiway like it was a Smart-Car! B|

I'm shipping some BOP Stack equipment to meet up with the Semi-Sub being built in Korea.

We're not even going to tax it on take off. Just about 110k kilos of freight. But we've got some super long strings. Couple TJ (Telescopic Joints) with assorted equipment that must be in Korea ASAP!

Big bird occasionally flies into IAH and it's actually flown over my house twice.

You hear those engines and start scanning the sky for something.

Then it appears!

And all you can do is watch in stunned wonder as it passes overhead.

:)

Don't go away mad....just go away!

We're just north of the long runway @ IAH, when she comes in it's LOUD and cast quite a shadow...B|

But it is a nose loader, (check out my link right above your post)

Are you sure it's not a drive thru like the C-5?

If not, we can exit the side doors.

Provided its got paratroop doors...

Dont think the steps of a normal door would be a good idea.

Don't know, but I haven't found any shots of the rear open!

I'm trying to remember, it's been a while since I was in it...I'm looking for some pics I have.

IIRC it's a side to side clam-shell with a ramp that extends out.

I Do recall walking in and seeing 2 or 3 overhead I-beam cranes on tracks like in a machine shop for moving things around inside...:oB|
