Road Trip!

Recommended Posts

I'm graduating from college in December and want to have some fun during my last summer break. So I've decided to road trip across the country.

I'm starting in the Los Angeles area and heading east through the southern part of the country. Then I'm going north along the east coast and back west through the northern states.

I plan on seeing Mt. Rushmore, Niagara Falls, MLB Hall of Fame, and Yellowstone (just to name a few).

Are there any places that you think I should go? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

DO NOT miss The Grand Canyon or Zion National ParkB|

Seriously, it takes a lot to impress me and they both did so easily, Niagra not so much

IMO, you won't have enough time to totally enjoy Yellowstone with this plan. Give yourself a minimum of 5 days in the park and you will still wish you gave yourself more.

BTW - Congrats on the upcoming degree.

Can I suggest that you read Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon, (William Trogdon). I found it fascinating. He drove around the USof A in a camper van by keeping off the main roads, so he visited some pretty amazing places.B|B|B|B|

P.S Thanks Mrs Squeak for donating the book.

What months, how much time on the road? Travel on the cheap or?
What do you like- cities to party or hiking in the boons?
Camping, motels, bumming couch space?
Jumping?
What vehicle?
Traveling alone or with people, dog?
No matter what, Brice Canyon is the most beautiful place at sunrise or sunset.
U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler.

If you are going to the Hall of fame you have to stop in Boston and take the tour of Fenway Pahk. Wrigley is beautiful but it does not have the history of fenway park. Why? because we have actually won a world series in fenway. I don't think the Cubs can say that of Wrigley.

Be sure to include Bloomington, IN.
I hear the kiss passes are great!:)
Also, I would include the Parachute School in Pecos, TX.

I'll probably leave late June and spend 6-8 weeks on the road. I'm not on a super tight budget, but would like to keep the costs down. I want to camp for part of it, but when available I'll stay in hostels or at friends.
I'm traveling alone in my '96 Mustang. I want to get some jumps in along the way.
I have fun partying in the city or hiking in the wilderness.

I definately want to get to Boston and check out Fenway. I've been to Wrigley and thought that its a great stadium.

That's a lot of miles for the time. If you just drove it would take 9 days. West of the Mississippi its easy to find camping, National forest, National parks, BLM land, state parks. East of the Miss harder.
Try to see stuff that might not be there again. The stuff like the Grand Canyon will be there your whole life.
Might concentrate on stuff east of the Miss time wise. And the south will be HOT and humid.

DC, Smokey Mountains, Nashville, Mammoth Cave, New Orleans, NY, Oshkosh air show.
Check www.roadsideamerica for some weird stuff.
Plan jumping and partying for weekends, hiking, tourist crap on week days. People work during the week and you can get real bored waiting for them.
Places I wouldn't go, cause there boring:
Four corners, Mount Rushmore, Capital Reef, Stone Mountain,
If you drive the Interstate you will miss America. Two lanes are where you see this country.
The Spam museum in Mn. Sturgis.
If you get to Yellowstone, stick with the southern loop. THe north half of the park is pretty empty and big.
Try to be someplace cool for sunset and sunrise, Chesapeek Bay, mountains, rivers. lakes.
Every evening stop at a bar and talk to the locals. Tell them what you're doing.
It will be great.
