Is unlimited really unlimited?

I had unlimited data through verizon, but they offered me a sweat deal to good to pass up on a new phone. And I had to get rid of unlimited data plan for the new phone...apparently they are phasing out unlimited data and are considering moving people who have it to other plan. It was a good business move when they instigated it, but not anymore. So if you got verizon...don't count on unlimited data for too much longer.

Just got off the phone with VZW - the rep told me that she wasn't aware of any such changes (I wouldn't expect her to be though either). However, she did say I was grandfathered in, & also said that there are people on plans from 10 years ago that are no longer offered.

I pay Verizon x amount of money for unlimited everything - minutes, texts & data. But I was wondering if unlimited really does mean everything. I listen to Pandora A LOT & also use my phone as a GPS - my Garmin is only for long distance trips at this point. So I'm pulling massive amounts of data.

Any thoughts?

Yep - logged a Crap Load of minutes on Verizon . . . unlimited is as it says.

I read a lot of the mobile tech blogs. I forget if it was Verizon or AT&T, but one of them actually has a 5gb limit even though it says unlimited.

Minutes and texts are unlimited for sure though.

Probably, but to be honest. I think it was both of them.

If Sprint has good coverage in your area. I would switch to them. $69.99 a month for unlimited Data, Text and mobile to mobile. 450 anytime minutes to landlines, free nights and weekends AND I get to upgrade every 12 months instead of having to wait two years

"Current subscribers with unlimited data plans on AT&T or Verizon don’t have to worry at the moment. Both companies are several months or a year away from changing their policy to get rid of unlimited data plans."

That is from an interview/article about both companies.

Verizon stated recently, when its 4G network is complete, THAT is when all unlimited data users will be switched over. That was announced back in May 2010.

Feel free to hang on till the end though...maybe you get an awesome deal?

Unlimited is as good as it gets...

I'm hoping that the prices will be fair; I don't want to have to worry about my usage after being used to unlimited all these years.

The hell with 4G!

The dumbest thing is everything transmitted to or from the phone through the network is data. Voice and texts included. Why even bother with the differentiation? :S

Money, of course.

Eventually (depends on how long network providers are able to fight it) you'll just see data to both home and mobile and all the voice, messaging, video, etc. will be IP services that aren't tied to the network provider. Network providers have a struggle ahead of them to avoid becoming a commodity, but for now they're going to milk the $10-20/mo texting plans for all they can.

/edited: whoops, their vs they're, that's what I get for rewriting my response too many times and not reading it all the way through before posting.

If the changes being discussed in this thread become reality, than obviously it'll be hellish for the consumer. B|
