Is unlimited really unlimited?

Recommended Posts

I pay Verizon x amount of money for unlimited everything - minutes, texts & data. But I was wondering if unlimited really does mean everything. I listen to Pandora A LOT & also use my phone as a GPS - my Garmin is only for long distance trips at this point. So I'm pulling massive amounts of data.

Any thoughts?

I used almost 2 GB of Data last month over the Verizon network... and haven't been charged anything extra nor do I expect to be charged any extra...

GPS will only use "data" when it's trying to draw a map of your current location...

unlimited should be unlimited... however... your unlimited service probably doesn't apply to tethering with a computer to share the phones connection... but as long as you're just working with your phone... you should be fine...

Cool. I don't use tethering, so as you say I should be fine.

I check my phone every now & then to see exactly how much data I'm using - but it's measured in kilobytes, not megabytes or gigs. B|

Nope. Last thing I need is a virus in my phone, capable of retrieving peoples names, numbers e-mails & addresses. I'm a bit of a security nut.

Verizon wireless also has a really nice online interface that will show your minutes/texts/data... and it shows how much data you use in a given month... and if you have an Android Phone you can download an application that will also show all of your usage...

Yep,,, and although it does show it in KB... determining the total usage in MB or GB just requires moving the decimal place to the left 3 (MB) or 6 (GB) places.

Also if you "View Usage" on the account overview page (@ verizonwireless.com) there is an option under the domestic data usage to view your data usage in MB or GB... if you don't wish to do the math in your head.

I seem to remember someone sending some obscene amount of texts and getting charged, who had unlimited.

I have sent ~10k texts some months, with lots of internet browsing (I have unlimited text, data and mms) and have streamed iheartradio for hours, never once had an issue.

I'm on AT&T though FWIW.

I've heard of this too; it was a T-Mobile customer. Apparently, they were on a mission to see how many texts they could send. Their bill supposedly had to be sent in a 20 lb-50 lb box.

What's cool is if you have a radio in your car that allows you connect devices via USB you get free satellite radio. :)

Many providers are still providing unlimited, but once you reach a designated limit, they start slowing your connection way down. They are trying to fight people tethering computers.

In the case of Verizon, they just charge $20 extra per month for tethering - but there's still a 2GB limit on it. I don't use tethering.

I don't like to talk on the phone, texting is much better, and no long pauses while you try to think of something to say... usually cut and to the point.

Most of my work related texts are simple messages that I get from the boss and pass down to the other soldiers, I can send the message to 15 guys at once, in far less time and not have to worry about leaving a voicemail if they dont answer. I get a text back from each one of them confirming they got the message, and thats 32 texts in a few mins.

Besides, the girl I was dating texted _alot_ so my numbers went through the roof.

My Jan bill had just shy of 6k texts on it, but I have had alot more when I wasnt on leave and at home.

You don't, but many people (especially with iPhone 3G's) were teathering well before it was an option. Apparently AT&T couldnt tell what you were and werent teathering because of the way the systems work, so they couldnt tell who was using it. :)

ETA: From my January bill:

Data Unlimited
DATA ACCESS 7,239,993 KB
No over charge ;)

I had unlimited data through verizon, but they offered me a sweat deal to good to pass up on a new phone. And I had to get rid of unlimited data plan for the new phone...apparently they are phasing out unlimited data and are considering moving people who have it to other plan. It was a good business move when they instigated it, but not anymore. So if you got verizon...don't count on unlimited data for too much longer.

When the iPhone first came out there were numerous horror stories about people setting up their plan incorrectly and getting 5-figure phone bills in the mail. There were still more stories of people getting encyclopedic paper statements that included every text, call, or data access that was made and they showed up in boxes rather than in an envelope. I've been with AT&T for a little over 6 years and have only had one billing screw up which they fixed without arguing with me.

Unlimited anything doesn't make much sense for us. I've been keeping an eye on our data usage, and I'm probably going to drop us both down to at&t's new 2GB plan to save an extra $10/mo. We both vary between 300MB and 1GB.
