Cat Problem. Please Help!

Recommended Posts

My cat put her left front paw into a sticky glue mouse trap*. She cannot open her toes/claws[:/]. The instructions say to use mineral oil to remove the stuff from skin. Anyone know if mineral oil will hurt my cat? She will end up licking the oil from her paw.

*I've had a few flies get into the house recently, and because I broke my electric fly swatter, I decided to try fly paper. Went to the store and right next to the fly paper were scented non-toxic mouse traps that are a simple plastic tray with a a layer of a VERY sticky substance. Yeah, sounds better than having fly paper hanging from the ceiling. So I put a couple trays up high where my cat can't get to them and caught a few flies. I accidentally left one on top of my computer monitor this morning before going shopping, and my cat got into it.

Either way, that'll teach the cat!

Could you possibly call a 24hr vet and ask them for a suggestion? I did a few searches, too... some say it's OK, some say not. I don't know if I'd chance it.

There was also an ask.com that someone wrote in asking the exact same problem looking for an answer and the reply was to use goo gone then wash well with dawn soap. (Obviously not allowing them to lick either product - but good luck with that.) Goo gone is not supposed to be toxic for use around pets, but this is actually for use ON the cat, so...

Good luck to you and your kitty! :)

I'd be concerned about the cat using my computer while I was gone.

What about olive oil? Looks like the worst thing about using that would be the kitty all of a sudden meowing with an Italian accent and demanding lasagna tomorrow night for dinner. ;)

Makes the cat taste better...:)

Go get some Goo-Gone. Rub it in and then wash it off really good. Nothing to worry about her licking off. I use it on my cats often and have never had a problem.

wtf?

Goo-gone, not to be confused with Shoe-goo.

But, that would be a story!

DO NOT USE GOO-GONE! That is highly toxic. Use mayonaise. Works great.

Goo-gone? What was he thinking!

Says "Harmful or fatal if swallowed" right on the label.

You need something slippery to coat the paw so that the glue can't re-stick after you get it loose.

Anything slippery.

Mayo, peanut butter, butter, vegetable oil (olive, canola, peanut, whatever) Crisco, anything.

I've used it for years on my kitties, for tar, oil, sap, etc. They don't attempt to lick it off as it's not on them long enough. And they aren't attracted to it.
I wouldn't use it if I thought they would be harmed.

I got some of it off with veg oil last night. She got most of it out from between her toes overnight. Her paw is functioning normally now. Thanks folks.

Hopefully it taught her to stay away from the computer. She gets up on the desk in order to eat the phone line going into my modem. She stands on the keyboard and somehow removes the "W" button from it. It has happened several times. Always the W key:S

Didn't I hear a similar story about the exiting White House staff doing exactly that just before Dubya moved in? Hey, maybe she's a 'Democat'.:D

Glad she's ok. Hopefully she didn't ingest too much of the stuff.
