VincePetaccio 0 #1 January 13, 2011 Greets, all. I've been making electronic music for a number of years and am recently becoming increasingly interested in performing live. I'm wondering if anybody here makes electronic music, and if so, whether you perform live. I have some questions that Dr. Google is having a hard time with!Come, my friends! regulator 0 #2 January 13, 2011 I've been using Reason and Ableton Live for years now...along with fruity loops, Acid, and several other applications and plug-ins. Whatcha wanna know?
VincePetaccio 0 #3 January 13, 2011 I grew up playing in bands until I opened my own studio (it was my high school job :o) and eventually started producing work for local artists. I've been working in the studio with Sonar and tons of soft-synths for a while now. Just wondering how to go about translating this all to the stage- I don't even know where to start in terms of software, logistics of performing (perform and loop parts, then layer? Or just pick a part of the song to play and pre-record the rest?). Stand-alone softsynths live? Totally comfortable in the studio, totally confused live. Also, I should note that I'm not really working with loops/samples, unless you count sample-based "synths," such as Kontakt.Come, my friends! 'Tis not too late to seek out a newer world! regulator 0 #5 January 13, 2011 Dude...Kontakt is KRAZY hard...but what I would look into is a ProTools setup.. this is of course if you have MAD CASH...since it'll cost around 10 grand to start off...this includes a 24 channel mixer and the software to interface...synths...and so forth. I'd say give ableton a shot...you can use it LIVE...hence the name ABLETON LIVE...its a killer application. Its got a ton of plug-ins...synths and drum kits. You can also manually input midi interfaces, or of course you can go out and buy a cheap keyboard-only keyboard...like an USB 88 key keyboard for around a hundred bucks...then you can use that with the midi interface. regulator 0 #6 January 13, 2011 When I lived in Dallas my roommate worked for Guitar Center for 15 years...I picked his brain for three years straight...from anything like ASDR basics to drum machines....you name it I'd say the two first apps I mentioned...are the best at what they do...kicking ass and taking names http://www.ableton.com/ http://www.propellerheads.se/ Now I will say that reason is LESS easy to start off and learn...if you are proficient at using Sonar then you might be able to pick it up without any instruction, but if you are new to music apps...it might be a little hard to handle right off the bat. regulator 0 #7 January 13, 2011 I will say that one of the major things about Reason is that it can be used to create basic loops...to advanced trance songs depending on your knowledge level. And if you are an advanced user, hit the key and it will flip the interface around and you can manually patch cables just like you were in the studio plugging in drum machines, synths, mixers...you name it. Its a killer application that will keep you busy for years to come...but it also works in conjunction with Ableton, which is what I would use in a LIVE situation since you can cue any sample in real time and inserted into your current session that will be on time. Both are amazing apps...and I have both on Bit Torrents already downloaded. Let me know if you want a copy ...hit me up on a PM
VincePetaccio 0 #8 January 13, 2011 Yea, I've been using Sonar for 8 years and see no reason to switch. I am of course quite familiar with Pro-Tools, but I'm not sure it would be better live than Sonar, especially since the vast majority of my synths are VST (and Pro-Tools, like Logic, doesn't like VST). I use an M-Audio Axiom midi controller in the studio that I'm sure would work fine live. But hey, I effing love Kontakt!!! Gimme your email address and I'll send you a sample of me loving it. VincePetaccio 0 #9 January 13, 2011 Interesting... I suppose I could create samples from my studio projects and insert them in an Ableton project and trigger them live. COOL!!!!Come, my friends! 'Tis not too late to seek out a newer world!
peek 21 #10 January 13, 2011 I write MIDI based (instrumental) songs (with no recorded "real" instruments) using Cakewalk Music Creator and Dimension Pro software synthesizer (as well as some other minor soft synths). My sound card output goes to a decent stereo amp and speakers. If I was going to do something live, I would plug the sound card output into a stereo mixer, and plug in any instruments (or microphones for singing) into the mixer, which would go to a power amp and speaker setup. Load a song, click on "play", and accompany the computer with singing/playing an instrument. The audience would need to wait between songs long enough for you to fiddler with the computer stuff, wait for the next song to load, etc. Is that what you wanted to know? This of course refers to MIDI based songs. I guess if you have tracks of recorded instruments as well as MIDI going to soft synths, then it shouldn't be too different. Edited to add: I see that "regulator" has suggested a lot while I was entering my reply. The stuff I was suggesting was of course a simple setup, for a coffee house or small bar type deal, not for a concert! You guys might be talking about stuff way beyond what I was imagining. regulator 0 #11 January 13, 2011 Let me show you some vids of folks using ableton in a live setting. If you use kontakt then you wont need any instruction.
ShayneH 0 #12 January 13, 2011 Ableton Live is a good choice to start off with. I'd also look into traktor. Cheers
