I give away an awful lot of beer. I make ~200 gallons a year; I can't possibly drink it all.

A friend's dad was on a home-brewing kick a few years ago.
Whenever he was invited to a party, he would show up with many cases of free beer.
Unfortunately, the novelty wore off and he quit brewing.
Now where are we going to find another PhD in chemistry who likes to give away his home-brewed beer?[:/]

Actually something that I don't like is when people have expectations that if you do something for them they some how "owe" you a favour.

I agree... but for me, I automatically feel like I should do something in return for a favor regardless of whether or not it was expected at the time.

Wow the guy asks if he could buy you a cup of coffee so that you would have a reason to stay around longer and engage in a conversation and your brain automatically runs off into rape...
YEAH!
:S

Something you, Shah, probably should be aware of is that any woman with even half a brain probably should have that running as a thought any time she's approached by a total stranger. Doesn't matter what the location is. Not that it's the over riding thought that dominates every interaction, but should at least be considered for a moment when a stranger walks up for no reason and asks to buy her a drink.

I'm saying someone needs to stop watching Life Time "Where it's always the man's fault."

The guy wasn't handing her a drink he offered to buy her a cup of coffee.

They make some really good meds for people who are this worried about the world.

The guy said Hi he just wanted to know her better. Yeah yeah yeah....get over it! No random dude buys a random girl a drink because she looks thirsty. He wants to impress her. You know...that pesky biology thing again.

Of course it can be done, but the guy who's throwing roofies around is much more likely to do it in a place where alcohol is served so that he shifts the "blame" for the impairment to the alcohol rather than the drug in the alcoholic beverage.

While it seems likely that the man was trying to start up a conversation with Nataly, it didn't sound like a terribly threatening environment and a roofie would probably be the farthest thing from my mind were I in her situation.

As for the original question - if nothing else, altruism at the very least makes the giver feel good about themselves, so it always has at least some benefit to the giver even if nothing else is expected or hoped for in return from the recipient.

So then you're admitting the thing that was probably on the guy's mind first and foremost was having sex with her.

If that's the case, then clearly it wasn't an altruistic move on his part. If it's not altruistic, then we have to leave open the possibility of nefarious.

He sure is - also as much like advising a girl to suspect a rapist if he asks her to have a cup of coffee

Ducked into Arby's last night for a quick bite. A mom and her adorable little girl were behind me. I had smiled at the little girl. I had heard her and her mother mention they were only there to get the daughter a turnover. When the girl at the register asked if there was anything else, I asked the little girl what kind of turnover, ordered it with the appropriate instructions to the cashier to get it to the girl. I took my order and went.

Pretty common for me. I figure the few bucks I spend on people I don't know and will never see again pays dividends someplace. I just want to leave everyplace I go a little better for my passing.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Maybe he thought you looked sleepy? :D

Or thought she would be after the roofies kicked in.

That's why I'd never accept a drink from a stranger unless I saw it being made by a neutral 3rd party.

I understand you believe she (Nataly) needs to be careful. But when you say “I'd never accept a drink from a stranger unless I saw it being made by a neutral 3rd party” are you saying you wouldn’t or she shouldn’t?
