30 jumps in one day, fundraiser for Autism Awareness

Recommended Posts

On March 22nd 1981 I stepped out of the door of a perfectly good airplane for the first time. This day changed my life forever. This year on Saturday April 2nd 2011 I will celebrate my 30 year anniversary by making 30 jumps in one day. Skydive Ogden is providing a 182 for the jumps and we are assembling a team of volunteers to pack and provide logistical support.

This event will also be a fund raising opportunity for Autism Awareness. I have a young son with Autism and in his honor we are going to raise as much money as we can to donate to the cause. We are currently working on getting the local media involved as well.

If you would like to help out with this effort donations can be sent to paypal address [email protected]
Any amount would be greatly appreciated, all proceeds will be donated to AutismSpeaks.org

This will not be even close to other records for most jumps in a day but it will be a personal best for myself and the most jumps for any single person at my DZ. Currently there is no "official" state record for most jumps so we hope to set that bar for any future attmpts. The goal is one jump every 15 minutes for almost 8 hours straight.

I am new at this fundraising thing so any tips or advice on soliciting funds would be greatly appreciated. We are also holding a raffle and I am donating a new GoPro as the grand prize. If you would like to donate a runner up prize that would be cool also. Anything a skydiver might like, a T-shirt, gift certificate, or anything really.

Thanks and wish me luck

Scott

What about hosting a garage sale for the cause? My hairdresser did that for breast cancer research and her shop raised about $600. All she did was notify her clients that they were having it, and people donated stuff for her to sell. I bet you could send out an e-mail to your friends or even make a FB post and you'd be able to get some donations.

Contact Perfect Jumps for Parkinson's Awareness

http://www.perfectjumps.com/

He's a great guy and he's been known to share his planning worksheets and experience for other causes of this type. We've done two events for Parkinson's so far (100 in a day and 200 in a day) and 2012 will do 300 in one day.

Regardless, the website might give you more ideas.

Remember the goal is to raise awareness for your cause. It's not about the jumps, it should be about visibility to Autism.

good luck

Thanks for the link, that is truly inspirational. With less than a month to go I don't see putting together such a professional website but I would like to talk to kevin for tips on getting sponsors and media support.
One of our new jumpers is a local weather anchor and he has said he would help to get it on the news desk.

This whole thing has really evoved into something special in a very short time. It started out as a chance to celebrate 30 years in the sport and then I started thinking about my boy and how this could mean so much more. You are right it is not really about the jumps at this point but it does inspire me to make this happen and raise as much as I can in the time left.

Great stuff, thanks for the post!

Thanks for the support!

We sold more tickets at the DZ today and more prizes have been donated. So far we have raised $485 in cash and the following prizes have been donated by our Sponsors:

GoPro Hero HD (from myself)
UPT 30% off a new container
Five T shirts and a banner from PD
Free night lodging in Moab during the boogie from PoolMarty (discounts on other night also)
New Cazer pilot chute from Western Parachute Sales
Titanium packing tool

About half the cash donations are from DZ.commers!

We only have about two weeks left and I am still contacting other dealers and manufacturers for prize donations for the raffle. Please contact me if you have anything you want to donate. We are on our way to meeting our goal but we are not there yet!

Thanks to all for helping to make this a reality.

You are already a Hero Millertime!
Thanks for buying tickets!

More sponsors and raffle prizes are coming in.

Jerry Baumchen from AeroSports USA has donated a new replacement cutaway handle custom fit for your rig and a cash donation.

ChutingStar is also sponsoring the event and made a very generous donation. Thanks Mike!

Dave DeWolf from ParaLoft is also stepping up to the plate.

You people are awesome!

Also, I found out just yesterday that April 2nd is international Autism Awareness day. I did not know this when I picked April 2nd for the 30 jump day.

Good mojo for sure!

Bump,

Thanks to Douglas Spotted Eagle for stepping up and making a generous donation and sponsoring our event with a nice selection of VASST software.

Very cool DSE!

We jumped today despite the mud and snow and we are on for next weekend, Weather is the only thing that will slow us down. It is still very much winter here.

I was hoping to make the 30 jumps today but unfortunately our 182 is down for maintenance. It is just not cost effective to make 30 hop and pops with the Caravan so we are going to reschedule. :(

Just a minor set back, and safety comes first. On a positive note this gives us more time for fundraising for the cause and that is really what this is all about.

The new tentative date is April 16th, Mechanics and weather permitting.

I would also like to thank Sunpath for joining our list of sponsors with a certificate for 35% off a new Javelin.

Here is the new link to our team fundraising page at AutismSpeaks.org. If you would like to join our team and donate Click on the link and then click on "join our team" This way you can donate directly to our charity. All funds previously donated by DZ.commers have been deposited as a general team donation.

http://events.autismspeaks.org/tu/30jumpsinoneday

Our 182 should be up and running by the end of next week so the date for the jumps and raffle drawing will be posted soon.

I would like to thank all our sponsors, here is the updated list:

Performance Designs
United Parachute Technologies
Mirage Systems
ChutingStar
ParaGear
Velocity Sports Equipment
Sunrise (Wings)
Western Parachute Sales
AeroSports USA (Jerry Baumchen)
Ogden Skydiving Center
Paraloft (Dave Dewolf)
Vasst
Sunpath (Javelin)
IFly Utah

We have had a few setbacks due to weather and mechanics but we are back on track and looking forward to the big day. On the positive side this gave us more time to prepare and raise donations. There is still plenty of time to step up and donate to the cause!

Scott

We had a great day, 24 loads in the 182 and 6 in the Caravan. I was on every load.

The sunset BFR on #30 was sweet!

Party and raffle on Saturday. Thanks so much to everyone who stepped up and made this happen, Skydive Ogden, and all of the donors and sponsors. It was a success!
