Panhandlers: What do you do AND how do you feel afterword?

Recommended Posts

You probably won't ever find a (real) disabled beggar in the US... And if you do, I would question why they are in the streets begging for your money when they could just stay at home and collect the disability benefits you already pay for through taxes, et cetera.

Not meant to be a comment on govn't/policies/taxes, just that as far as I know the US looks after its disabled people... And if that's the case, it makes more sense for someone who legitimately can't work to collect benefits than to become a beggar.

The people that genuinely need help, eventually get it. There are enough food banks, shelters, etc to support all of the homeless.

The "pros" that you see on the same corner every day for years are people that just don't want to work and get money tax-free. The majority of them are addicts. When you give them money, you are supporting their addiction. I would love to stand on the corner with a sign and have people hand me jump tickets to support my skydiving addiction, but I don't think that's right.

When I travel, I always come back with foreign change that I can't get rid of, because the banks won't exchange it. I give it to the homeless people. Once, one of them saw the change before I got a green light to drive away. He threw it back at my car :D Didn't leave a mark, so no harm.

Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Hi G

Panhandling is a job for some people[:/]

8HR's/day, 5 days/week outside, rain, sun, heat, cold. Thats a not a nice job but to some people it's a job, and must pay well enough that the panhandlers show up everyday and can afford to commute for a better Job.

In the big city across the bridge it's against the law to do the sign/street corner panhandling thing. :|About a yr or two ago the folks from the "wrong side of the bridge" started commuting, carpooling, public trans. to the "right side of the bridge".

The panhandlers hit the glory hole,:P most of the locals are >:(>:( The chief of police is >:( because we don't have the same "Safety laws" as the folks on the wrong side of the bridge have.

News flash: After the 3rd city council public mtg
I'm guessing the council will pass a Safety Law prohibiting panhandling.

I have also offered jobs and always get some lame ass excuse.

Not to long ago a friend of mine caught one of the pan handling couples in town at the local casino gambling and drinking the money away that he had given them earlier in the day.

Another friend and his wife seen a couple holding the "need money for food" sign outside Wal Mart. She went in and bought them a bag of groceries. When she took it back out to them the woman came unglued on her screaming she didn't want her food. It was all my friend could do to keep his wife from punching the bitch out right there in the parking lot.

They may as well hold a sign that says "I will stand here all damn day doing nothing but look pitiful for your hard earned cash".

Seen one the other day sitting there talking on a cell phone.

Then there are the ones that have a dog. If you can't afford to feed yourself, how do you feed your dog? Gimme a break. Get off your lazy ass and get a job. I'll donate my money to a worthy cause.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.

If they got a dog, I'm the sucker that gives them dog food. One guy was very happy about it.

I can understand that. It's not the dogs fault and they deserve to eat. Good for you.:)

Dogs are also a source of warmth and companionship for some homeless people

I was walking with a friend once when we saw a panhandler walking across the street towards us and my friend told me "get him before he gets you". I didn't understand what he was saying until the guy got about 10 ft. from us and my friend asked him "hey, you got a dollar to spare?" The guy immediately turned back around and took off. I've done this a few times since and it always works.

The last time I gave money was to a guy who pulled up at a gas station and had some story about being out of gas and trying to get home. After I gave him like $5 he hopped back in his car and while driving off without getting gas he hollered out the window "I'm going down the street where gas in cheaper". Since then I give no money, but try and donate clothes and blankets to the shelter. If they really want help then they will go to a shelter and seek out what they really need.

And, in a pinch, high-protein nutrition.

I won't give money. But I will buy them a burger, or dog food, toothpaste or whatever they say they need the money for. (Depending on the establishment they are standing in front of.) If they turn it down, it's obvious BS or they just want booze money.

When I get a tear and a thank you, I smile and feel good about what I've done. Especially when I see their hungry dog eating. :)

Be yourself!

ZERO!!!!

There was a well known POS around my town that drove all over on his scooter with a big sign that said "HELP I AM A HOMELESS VETERAN" He wore a uniform and bush hat.

I was at the VA hospital when the cops brought him in needing medical attention, guess who was not a veteran nor had ever even served one day?

I rarely wish ill upon others but I had wished some homeless veterans would have discovered this and killed him outright.

He was a shit stain upon society and also took the very food and other sustenance from the mouths of those he claimed to be one of.

I later found out he lived in my mothers building for seniors and was nothing more than a convicted pedophile who had served time during the Vietnam war.

That was the most disgusting abuse of the good nature of others and a slap to the face of all Veterans who felt badly as if this man had fallen through the cracks.

What I don't get is how many people take offence at being asked for money.

I very rarely give, but I don't just ignore the person - most times I find that if I say 'no, sorry', there will be a polite response: 'Ok, thanks anyway.' That leaves both people feeling better about the encounter.

where's the "Don't give them anything and don't feel much of anything afterward" choice

I have read articles about how there are so many homeless veterans. I am sure that some exist, however, many of these articles claiming it is an epidemic were unquestioningly relying on the panhandlers own words that they were in fact veterans. They never dared to check.
