Necessary "extras" in a new car

Recommended Posts

Quote

My first car was a 1964 Buick Special. Big ass light green monster, bench seats and a giant steering wheel. :D

My first car was a '56 Chevy, and it had a giant steering wheel, too. The engine compartment was so devoid of extras that I could sit under the hood on the wheel well (not the fender) and remove the carburetor or heads.

Personally, I say yes. Every extended warranty or maintenance agreement I have ever purchaced has always paid for itself. The exception might be if you purchase new with a 100k mi. bumper-bumper warranty included standard. It might be over kill then.

Are extended warranties worth it for a new car?

Get a new car with a decent factory warranty.

Aftermarket warranty companies profit off screwing your out of repairs.

You have more leverage with a factory warranty because of the sale relationship.

What's a power door?

Oh, duh. I meant windows.

Heck, they have cars now that the doors open by remote control, at least the sliders on some mini-vans. :)

Yep, that's mine. I bought it used so whatever it had, I got. The most tricked out version of the Odyssey has a remote rear door. Open and close via remote! Good for people with bad shoulders or too short to reach up and close the door, like Gia.

I'd skip the built in navigation system -

I like having a portable GPS so you can take it on trips. Rental cars are where I need my GPS, hopefully preloaded with all the motels, DZ's, etc.

I, too, keep cars for years. I'd hate to have a 11-12 year old "state of the art" navigation system stuck in the middle of my dash. After over a decade of advances, a Ouija board or deck of Tarot cards would probably be better. :D

I love my portable GPS... but it has a little something extra built into it:)

i don't like built in things, they take waaaaay to long to get fixed when they break.

Very good point, and repair prices are going way up. A coworker's Escalade is costing $700+ for a speedometer replacement. :S:o

that is just silly! heil, i don't even look at the speedo on the dash anymore, just the GPS, which I move from car to car.

1. Brakes that work, and preferably all 4 of them, not just 2 like my last 2 cars.

2. Windshield washers, it's a real pain to get out and wash them by hand in the winter.

3. A driver side window that rolls all the way up AND down without opening the door to move it manually.

I am thinking the best options on a vehicle for next year... will be NO electrical gadgets on the vehicle at all.... with a very small easily bump started diesel motor:ph34r:

... that is capable of towing a really big boat.

Air
Cruise control
Variable speed wipers
power windows and locks

That's about it. For me vehicles are just a way to go from a to b.

These two things "roll cage" and "cruise control" are mutually exclusive, and yet you want them both on a car at the same time? No I am afraid that makes no sense.

Since you say you have a roll bar and you properly posted a roll rage reference, I have to assume you know what a roll cage is. Roll cages are NOT street legal (at least not where I live) because if you bash your unprotected head into one of the bars you can knock yourself silly (or worse). Therefore the only place you will ever see, ever need a roll cage is for a car prepped only for track use while you are wearing a helmet. I guess you could drive around the public roads wearing a helmet, but to drive a roll cage equipped car anytime without a helmet is just asking for it.

Cruise control is fine to use on the highway to save some gas, but since you want a roll cage for a car that can only be used on the track, why would you want cruise control? Cruise control is the last thing you want on a track car. Cruise control for a street car? yes, but not a track car.

You still make no sense. Why are they "mutually exclusive"?

By your name I'm going to assume your in the states. What state do you live in and what is the specific statute prohibiting roll cages? Your state must be special as I've never heard of such a thing.

So hitting your head on everything else in the car i.e. windshield, steering wheel, pillars is ok but not if it's a bar that is part of a roll cage? I mean if your bouncing off the roll cage you must not have a seat belt on right? Now I'd have a 5 point harness when I do the cage just to not half ass it.

Speak for yourself on the track being the only place you would ever see a roll cage. On my car I want an internal cage, when I get another truck I want an external cage.

So since your so focused on track cars what about cruise control would hurt a track car? Why is it the last thing you would want? So you would want a sunroof before cruise control? What about a gps system? Dice hanging from the mirror? Really, cruise control is the last thing you would want?

Out of curiosity what else could it be?

Are extended warranties worth it for a new car?

I'd say no. The money I've saved by skipping these types of warranties, including electronics etc. have more than made up what I could have spent out of pocket if something happened. One time I decided to get one because of the car I bought. The original manufacturer warranty had just expired and the cost of replacing a $11 part was going to be about $2k which is what the extended warranty cost me. I thought at least I would get my money out of it. Turns out the company went bankrupt and I was SOL. So much for that.

You still make no sense.

Let's take a step back and ask ourselves "What is this thread about"? The OP of this thread is asking for people's opinions on what options they like when they order a new production car from a manufacturer. Plenty of people came along giving their feedback. Then you came along and said "I would like to order a roll cage". Now I am not aware of a single manufacturer of street legal road cars that offers roll cages (if you are please educate me as to who offers them). Sure you can order something like a Cup car from certain manufactures. But guess what? Cup cars are NOT street legal. They are race cars.

I know plenty of people who have roll bars, racing seats and harnesses in their street legal road cars. But none of these people have done this because they wanted the added safety features on the public roads. They added these features because they track their cars. On the race track when you are driving at the limit these things are good to have. When I am on an "In Lap" at my local track I don't even need to use my brakes and yet I am still traveling faster than people drive on the public roads. If you want a roll cage for a track car, then fine no argument. But if you think you need a roll cage for a car you only drive on the public roads, then we have a bigger problem here than you possibly conking your head on the cage. Why are you driving so fast on the public roads where you think you need a roll cage? Come join us on the race tracks. There you can drive at your limits and not be putting the general public at risk.

Roll cages are devices for purpose built track/race cars. This thread is not about what options would you add to your track/race car. You can start one and I would eagerly participate in it. I have decent knowledge of what makes a good race car, but I also have much more still to learn.

Take your step back and look at what was asked.

"For those of you who would buy a new car, what are the "extras" that you would consider as something you would "need"."

You have no idea what I use my car for. I gave my response, you'll just have to deal with it.

Please show me an example of a manufacture of production street legal road cars that offers roll cages. I am not aware of a single manufacture who offers a roll cage as an extra. You want a roll cage? Fine, buy a car, strip the interior down to the bare metal and start welding in a roll cage. Once the roll cage is installed, then start adding back the interior components. But as I said I am not aware of a single manufacture that offers roll cages in their production street legal cars as an option. The only manufactures I know that offer such a car are companies who build purpose built race cars.
