Canada wins 25-20 ... but for a while there it looked like Tonga would take the game in the 2nd half. Canada needed that win because they still have to play New Zealand and France. :S

Well that was not expected. I didn't even know Canada could SPELL Rugby, let alone play it

Rugby is a lot tougher than American football I rate, while it's true American football has more serious life threatening injuries, the pain that the average player goes through in a game is much more in rugby. You hardly see American football players drenched in blood during the games like you do in rugby.

Maybe that explains why the US tends to never get very far in rugby :)

I'm not the biggest rugby fan, but I'll be watching all the world cup matches I can, and hopefully South Africa can set the record for the most times a single country has lifted the cup. Though currently that's looking very unlikely.

I can't see the point of American football carry-ball.. Too much stop-start boredom for me and too many ad' breaks.

Also why do they keep swapping people on the pitch - just pick a team and play it.... specialists my arse.

Ads ARE the point. The rules are made for the benefit of the TV networks, not the fans.

Wales v Samoa this evening.

Cymru Am Byth!

I watched that game. It was a good one, a closely contested match.

Wales 17 - Samoa 10

Big upset yesterday with Ireland taking down the #2 rank Wallabies.

Ireland 15 - Australia 6

finally ... for most of the game, #14 Canada play tough against #5 France. But when it counted, the Canadians folded to the Frenchies who proved to be bigger, stronger and faster. [:/]

France 46 - Canada 19

Amateur teams just don't have the conditioning and fitness to run, drive and hit for the full 80 minutes at the intensity level of an international match. France v Canada went like England v Georgia - a close match with the pro's running in a handful of tries in the final quarter to paper over the cracks.

TBH though I've given up taking much notice of form in the group stages. For instance when England won in 2003 their early performances were abysmal, and in 2007 the All Blacks were absolutely sensational in their group matches and then got mugged by France in the quarters. (And France are just France - you can never tell what they're going to do from one game to the next!)

There is a big game going on live right now. A quarter final game between South Africa and Australia. I am planning on watching the F1 race from Japan which starts less than one hour from now instead of the rugby game. But I am recording this rugby game and will watch it tomorrow. This rugby world cup tournament has been awesome. I am a fan of American football, but these world cup rugby players are tough MOFO's. Good stuff I tell you. B|

Might as well save the space on your recorder, they were both rubbish, Australia unable to either keep possession for more than a handful of phases or kick effectively, South Africa totally uninspired in attack. And the ABs didn't look particularly great against Argentina either, losing Carter does seem to have knocked them out of their stride (they know what they have to work with now though, so they might be back on form next weekend).

Amazing as it seems, Wales played by far the better of all the quarter finalists. What new dimension have I just stepped into?

I stayed up late last night and watched the 2nd half of the All Blacks versus Pumas game after the F1 race. New Zealand eventually proved to be the better team, but the game was much closer than the final score. Oh and yes late in the New Zealand/Argentina game they mentioned that Australia did beat South Africa so I can't watch the game later today not knowing who wins. But I still don't know the final score. haha

It does not matter. Even if the game is not the best, I am still enjoying the World Cup. These rugby players are tough MOFOs. I already knew rugby was a tough game (I played it for four years when I was younger), but the games at the elite World Cup level has been awesome to watch. Oh and yes Wales has played well. They could very well find themselves in the finals and prior to watching last night's All Blacks/Pumas game I just assumed New Zealand would walk all over most in the competition. But apparently I was mistaken on how good the competition actually is. :)

Australia didn't beat South Africa, Bryce Lawrence (The ref) beat South Africa. I mean blaming the ref is an annoying habit teams have when losing, but one just has to watch the game and know the rules to see it.

A tri-scoring opportunity (on the 10m) was denied because the ref decided it was a forward pass (not even close in replays). And then penalized South Africa for a 'high tackle' 10 seconds after Australia did the exact same thing. Needless to say my facebook newsfeed was filled with "fucking ref".

Our attack was decent on two or three occasions, but it was then interrupted by bad reffing. Australia had a good defense though too. We really should have won that game though.

Score was 11-9 at the end.

I watched my recorded Australia/South Africa quarter-final game last night and overall South Africa was the better team in a very very sloppy game. But the rugby gods (call them the refs if you must) were not thinking very kindly towards the Springboks. However that pass calling back the tri was extremely close and you need to remember the officials do need to make it in real time. I have seen the officials go to video replay in this tournament when trying to determine if the ball touched the ground on a tri, but I do not know if they went to video replay on that forward pass. I don't think they did.

Yeah no doubt, that forward pass was close and I think it may have been a forward pass even, but about 5 minutes later there was another forward pass called when we were at the 10m line, which was blatantly not a forward pass, and that's the time we had another good driving tri opportunity. Needless to say, everyone here is still pissed about the ref ;p

Don't be too hard on Lawrence. I heard his guide dog died on Thursday.

:D:D

You guys really can't blame the ref for losing, you were almost as poor and one dimensional as us (england) - but Lawrence did have an absolute shocker, seemed like he was making decisions on the roll of a dice.

(And guys, it's "try" - as in you get a try at goal;))
