virgin-burner 1 #26 September 5, 2011 Quote Quote We use those lasers in our ditch bags when we do long offshore diving trips....they are incredible. One manufacturer states that they can be seen as far as 30 miles away during ideal conditions. Definitely useful if you were floating and needed to get a pilot's attention. "Drifting diver killed in freak accident: crashed into by blinded pilot." apparently, angela merkel's plane was "blinded" the other day; coincidence this thread popped up!? i think not.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. It does seem like just a flashlight, kinda. There is a huge distance between the lase'r' and the aircraft getting lased, it's like a video game. a very disassociate game. They don't even know the danger they could be putting pilots in. I, for one, would NEVER. EVER. shine a laser at a vehicle, especially an airplane. Mostly because it is a HUGE danger to the pilot's health and the safety of the passengers of the airplane. Second because if the pilots DO get lased, (and are not blinded*) they have a gorram 20,000$ moving map at their fingertips, and it is very easy for them to transfer the EXACT location of the laser origin to ATC and thus authorities. *though it is possible, most lasers used to do this are owned by idiots that are ignorant of the cause and effect. Further, most of them are green lasers that cost 20$ and are 1000m where most of these incidents happen. BUT there is still a blinding effect at that point, making it a danger to the immediate safety of the aircraft. -SPACE-
Calvin19 0 #28 September 15, 2011 no no no... dude. I want the one that was released 2 weeks ago and can burn things in space. - 1000mw (1 WATT) 532nm handheld laser. $1,000.00 "...can damage sensors in orbiting satellites" http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/S3_Krypton_Series-113-63.html A few aviation web sites are not as impressed. maybe Wicked needs a second chance. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/laser_wicked_retina_damage_FAA_205338-1.html

Calvin19 0 #31 October 24, 2011 That happens surprisingly often. The pilots should have lasers that are 10x as powerful and just lase them right back. Any idiot lazing an airplane/spinner is too stupid to be wearing protective goggles.
virgin-burner 1 #32 October 24, 2011 the article is actually about rescue-pilots being blinded.. how goat-fucking stupid does one need to be to do THAT!? “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S.
