Any sort of order here is meaningless. It was never a competition. However, when I think of importance as far as influence to the medium goes, here are a few that come to mind.

Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ofD9t_sULM

Bob Dylan -Subterranean Homesick Blues
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oo6rhCaaO4

The Beatles - 1st Ed Sullivan Performance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHuRusAlw-Y

The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk

The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction

Sad about Davy Jones, but if anybody is actually waxing nostalgic about the "music" the Monkees made? Uh . . .

It was neither my intention to limit it to 3, nor for everyone else to prioritize.
The number was open-ended and the order is inconsequential.

Admittedly, I thought about Cream and not unlike you have more favorites I could add... those are just my own personal top three in which listening to several times never made my ears bleed. One that I left off was... now correct'me if I'm wrong - The Windmills of my Mind by Vanilla Fudge? Just kinda popped back in MY mind as I was typing... : )

Kinda weird for me to consider "classic rock & roll" can now probably include the Black Crowes. But some of my all time favorite "This is some Rock and Roll" are:

Ram Jam - Black Betty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMLnDuzgkjo (note - y'all may wonder who the one dude is. That's singer Myke Scavone. Ram Jam was formed AFTER Black Betty was recorded with Bill Bartlett singing. Myke was lead singer but for this video he had nothing better to do than rock out)

Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands to Yourself www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdpAop7gp0w (admittedly pushing the classic rock envelope. Fuck it!)

Molly Hatchett - Flirtin' With Disaster
www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhhtRxqSrys

KISS - 100,000 Years - www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwnUFm4Kito

RObin Trower - Day of the Eagle - www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w7LqtjDV4I

So many more. Get me some Judas Priest! Next week I may be in a mood that leads me to less heavy matters, such as "Blue Sky" by the Allmans and "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straights. But I've been in a heavy let's fuckin' rock mood the last couple of weeks.

Classic Rock 'n Roll is early Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry...

It morphed into Classic Rock sometime around 1963. I believe Rolling Stone magazine credits The Kinks with leading the transition.

Nope. That was sub-genre of Rock & Roll - "Rockabilly" usually (but not exclusively) refers to the type of rock and roll music which was played and recorded in the mid 1950s by white singers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, who drew mainly on the country roots of the music.[33] Many other popular rock and roll singers of the time, such as Fats Domino and Little Richard, came out of the black rhythm and blues tradition, making the music attractive to white audiences, and are not usually classed as "rockabilly."

The classic rock format evolved from AOR radio stations that were attempting to appeal to an older audience by including familiar songs of the past with current hits.[4] In 1982, radio consultant Lee Abrams developed the Timeless Rock format which combined contemporary AOR with hits from the 1960s and 1970s.[5] By 1986, the success of the format resulted in oldies accounting for 60–80% of the music played on album rock stations. On a separate more mellow note....

Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds Circa 1965

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Hi John,

But it all started with this guy:

Uh . . . no. Not even close. He may have helped popularize the term, but no white guy started rock and roll. That honor, in my opinion, goes to a guy you've probably never heard of. He doesn't even have an entry on Wikipedia. His name was Ernest McLean and sadly he just recently died. Another one you might want to look up is Jack McVea.

ZZ Top - La Grange

Billy Gibbons is one of my all time favorite guitarists.

I got to meet him a couple of times. Was the friend of the ultra-conservative car show host, Barry Meguair, whose show I worked on for a couple of years. We did a more than a few segments with Billy. Really nice guy. Really amazing contrast being in the same room with him and Barry. The ONLY things they had in common were money and cars, but it seemed to be enough.
