Blu ray FTW!!

Remember when we thought that about DVDs? Amazing how shoddy the DVD image (and to a lesser extent the sound) seems now in comparison to Blu-Ray.

I can watch my old DVD movies happily enough, but it takes me a few minutes to adjust before I stop noticing just how poor the picture quality is. Same will apply to Blu-Ray a few years from now. :)
Bry, a lot of my favourites have already been mentioned - but I really enjoyed The Social Network and We Need To Talk About Kevin, if you haven't seen either of those yet.

But be warned that the violence in it isn't cartoonish Hollywood stuff, but includes slow torture. I remember seeing girls exit the theatre nearly in tears.

On the other hand, the comedy aspects of it were really good -- none of the criminals wanted the code name Mr. Pink as opposed to Mr. Black.

Right now my viewing pleasure consist of all Blue-Ray DVD's on a Plasma screen with a surround sound system.

I just can't imagine going back to VHS on a 25 inch CRT screen in stereo..

I can hardly wait till I can upgrade to a 3D Blue Ray player.

Amazingly, no one has mentioned the masterpiece "Cutaway."

The acting is incredible, the skydives go forever and like all skydivers in real life, they fund their speedstar team by running dope.

You -do- realize that bit is based in historical fact; right? There's more truth in the film Cutaway than a lot of people realize.

The Dark Backward - people either love it or hate it!

Marty Malt (Judd Nelson) is a garbage man who moonlights as a (really awful) stand-up comic. Audiences hate his act but his disgusting best friend and fellow garbage man Gus (Bill Paxton) keeps assuring him he's great and that the crowds love him. One day an arm starts growing out of Marty's back and Gus, who plays the accordian during Marty's act, convinces him to work it into their routine. They get a talent agent (sleazy Wayne Newton) and a succession of bookings follow. The whole things plays out as a coal-black parable about the foibles of decency in an oportunistic world.

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Yes I do. There is a lot of historical truth to the movie, and I know the story of Cowboy's Caravan. However, I think it was out of step with modern skydiving, even when it came out in 2000 (or was it 1999).

Inglorious Basterds.

It's awesome... Loved the Jew Bear coming out with his bat and beating the nazi officer to death. :D

Not DVD, but Netflix streaming . . . as of just a couple of days ago . . . the 2000, Japanese film version of, Battle Royale.

I watched this last night. Well worth it if you want to see a grittier, darker version and slightly different take on the reasons behind a "Hunger Games" type story.

Suzanne Collins denies being influenced by this. I say there's no way. Far too many plot points are exactly the same for hers to be simply a coincidencal and parallel invention.

"Aldo: I speak the most Italian, so I'll be your escort. Donowitz speaks the second most, so he'll be your cameraman. Omar speaks third most, so he'll be Donny's assistant.

Omar: I don't speak Italian.

Aldo: Like I said, third best"

I just watched it, and Wow. "Enjoyed" isn't quite the word, but very riveting. I call B.S. on Suzanne Collins being uninfluenced, as well. Unless she never read or saw it, there is no way she didn't take this story and modify it (quite well).

I would like to recommend a movie.

A Lonely Place to Die

It's a 2011 movie from the UK set in the Scottish Mountains where 5 friends (3 men and 2 women) set off on a climbing trip that turns into something they never expected. This movie has a realism about it that other movie makers ignore. The movie has some great climbing scenes and has you sitting on the edge of your seat for the first hour. If you can find fault in the flick, it does get a little bizarre at the end of the movie. But still worth the watch in my opinion. It's available as an iTunes downloaded rental or purchase. You can also find the DVD on Amazon.com.

PS: don't watch the trailer if you really want to keep the events of this movie a surprise, keeping you even more on the edge of your seat. But if you do want to see the trailer, here it is: ;)

Hope you enjoy it. I know it had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. One of my favorite lines from the movie was:

"Remind me why we do this again" - Ed

"Because we don't surf" - Rob
