What would you say/How would you feel???

Recommended Posts

So an ex friend from YEARS ago decided to add me on facebook yesterday. The brief back story....we met when I was stationed at NAS Jax so that tell you how long ago this was considering I got out of the Navy August of 2007. After I got out we hung out for a little while longer then roughly the beginning of 2008 we just lost contact. Well....2 years later(2010) he comes out of the blue with "can I borrow money". Not a "hi/hello...how ya doing...what ya been up to"...nothing of the sort. I felt blatently disrespected. So I just didn't reply to him. We used to be boys back in the day. Well I told him how I felt and he said "So, it's all about you still" referring to me. Hell no it's not all about me...I just have a lot more respect for my friends than to pull something like that!

Was I out of line or was I rightfully justified in what I did??

Oh and let me add this....before anyone says "be the friend and loan him the money"...it took him 2 years to pay me back 100 dollars that I loaned him in 2005 when we first met...so his credibility isn't the best...

You were being an asshole, flat and simple. You coulda helped him out.
"Can I borrow money?"
"Sure! There's a Bank of America right down the road!"

My reality and yours are quite different.

After playing the sucker 3 times, I loan money to NOBODY.
Right now 3 people owe me money, totaling ~$7500.
Only one ever made any effort to pay part of it back.
The other two never paid back a penny, and one had been a "friend" for 15 years.

If he wasn't all about money then I could of added some humor into the situation....but seriously...like on pay day the guy would be broke and he was an E5...so they make decent money!

I've loaned dough to coworkers that have a good job and I trust. No problems. But this guy? Out of the clear blue sky? Sounds like a meth head.:D

Refer to the post is just put up lol. He made the money but was so financially irresponsible that he couldn't pay it back. Maybe it was drugs...I dunno. He never did anything around me so its a possibility!

I don't make enough to loan out that much! And even if I did...friend or not....notarized paperwork would be done up for something like that!

I wouldn't loan money to someone who looked for me just to ask for a loan instead of actually wanting to be friends again. It seems like he might have burned his bridges with his normal support system and now he's desperate. There's more to this story...keep an arm's length!

Agreed. I would be suspicious of any old friend, ex or not who comes up out of the blue and asks for money. They're barking up the wrong tree. :|

Out of the blue means he's already hit up & owes everyone he 'knows'.

OTHO...I've given $hort term loans to 'friends' if they leave something with me as security...like a pawn with no interest. Seems to motivate repayment.

In fact I'm 'holding' an antique rifle for a 'friend' who borrowed against it & pays back a little at a time. We're both happy with that arrangement.

All you have to do is get him to give you his bank account info.
THEN . . . Tell him that the deceased prince of some Nigerian province's widow will be sending you 3 million in us cash monetary funds using his bank account. I'm positive he will only use what he needs to borrow out of that 3 million.

Who knows. Could be fun to watch.

You can get 75% of it back. Just hire thugs to shake 'em down and give them 25% for their work.

I've loaned $700 to a friend and saw about 1/4 of it 15 years later. And I've loaned a heck of a lot more than that to another and saw it repaid with interest a few months later.

My philosophy is that I do not loan money to friends with an expectation I will be paid back, and I don't loan money I cannot afford to lose. That way 90% of the time I am pleasantly surprised instead of being annoyed 10% of the time.

As I am sure has probably been mentioned...its usually never a good idea to loan money to friends and family.

Personal and business relationships are best kept separate in my exp.

So that being said I would say you were plenty justified not loaning him money (even if he was a friend you were in recent contact with). Him coming out of the blue and starting the conversation that way is a dick move on his part IMO. I would have told him the same thing.

Just think, if he is asking you (dude he hasnt talked to in several years) for money....how big of a POS is he? He can't get ANYONE who currently knows him to loan him money.....thats a sign.

If he is really your boy then you suck as a friend.

Whats money really in comparison to all the things your willing to do for good friends.

For the very limited number of people i consider close friends, i would risk bodily harm, and even death for. So either he is not your boy or we have different definitions for the word.

Of course you were right and dont forget it because it will happen.

These days there are lots of places to get loans, but the worse your credit rateing the higher the interest rate.B|

Thats my point though. If he would have handled it differently then I would have been more open to loan him money...but to start out the way he did....he jsut would have disappeared again like he did years ago!..

It's highly unlikely that he had anything of real value to use as collateral considering(and i left this fact out) he used pawn shops quite a bit back in the day, and I'm sure that hasn't changed being that he is still the same as he was back in the day.

The "boys' part of the friendship essentially died out soon after I got out of the navy...
