Iowa officials say the Telequal caller thought she was contacting a 73-year-old Alzheimer’s patient who had given money in the past. But the woman’s family previously had changed her number and forwarded calls to Consumer Protection.

My father was legally blind for the last 13 years of his life. He regularly said that one of the blessings was that he couldn't read his credit card number, so he always told the phone solicitors that they had to send material.

He was a really soft touch, and knew it, and was comfortable with it. But he also knew that as he aged, folks would take advantage of it.

The other "blessing" of being legally blind was that every woman was beautiful :)

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

The worst are the telemarketers that claim to be "for charity", when they are taking the majority of the cash and giving a pittance away. In this case, an out-of-state "charity", which kept 85% of the revenue :S

Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Some are even worse. That's why we're so proud that our Leap for Lupus is funded out of pocket. A buck spent on raffle tickets is a buck that goes to lupus research. B|
