parts of the Tail are sitting on the numbers. Some sitting in the water right off the runway.

Where did you see this?

Some verbal witness descriptions I'm finding seem to indicate it did a ground loop.

Meh. It ain't that bad. Could have been much worse.

Looks like the pilot got caught up on the back side of the power curve and landed short.

No excuse for this. None. Totally CAVU day. Light winds. There's an ILS for this runway and even if the plane was on autoland the pilots should have recognized any issues.

Looks as if most people survived.

Why was the aricraft making an emergency landing?

Power loss / frozen fuel, again?

That's the thing, it WASN'T. It was a perfectly normal landing except it was short of the runway, which is just bad flying.

Not aware that this was an emergency landing.
Looks like Quade is right;
The plane slammed the underside of it's tail into the seawall short of the threshold, breaking off the tail, then sliding off the left side of RWY 28L. See this video: http://video.foxnews.com/v/2530590862001/

No. The aircraft almost certainly didn't "flip" or "cartwheel." It may have "ground looped" (on the yaw axis), but that is to be expected. There simply is not enough damage to the aircraft to support "flipped" or "cartwheeled." Some "witnesses" said the wings came off...that's clearly not the case either.

Yikes! They're really not having much luck with the 777, are they?

What are you talking about? The Triple has been flying since mid 90's and this will be only the second hull loss, or crash. British Airways pancaked one in London about 5 years ago due to iceing in the fuel. That plane has an unbelievable safety record.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
