Got my first ever speeding ticket...

Recommended Posts

So I got flashed the other day and in the post came the bad news: I was going 59 in a 50 zone. And they knock off 5 km/hr to compensate for possible slight variances between captured speed and actual speed. So officially, the ticket is for going 4 km/hr above the speed limit. :|

And what did my boyfriend say when he saw it?? "Awww baby... 59 km/hr?? I bet you thought it was a 70 zone!!!" :D:D (I did :|) Ah well... €90 for my "cheap thrills"... That'll teach me to ride so recklessly (at 11:50 pm alone on the street on a wednesday night after a long day of crunching numbers). I'm a MANIAC - I should be stopped!!

Yeah.

***Maybe he just saw a hot chick in leather on a bike and was looking for any excuse he could find to get a closer look at you.

Sorry, Nat, but I could totally see this happening to ya. :D

It happened once to my wife. :S:D

MAN... In France, even the traffic cameras are horny!!! DAMMIT!!

Nah... It was an automated camera and an automated ticket. [:/] I suspect that at that speed an officer would not have bothered to stop me (even if I were a guy).

Whatever. I got the ticket, I paid the ticket. Still a little surprised I was speeding at all, but I'm sure the camera has no reason to lie...

Belgium - 150. I never even received the ticket. I got a notice that I was late paying it. No idea where it was or what the offence was. I just paid it. I presume I was trying to get away from a crazy Belgian driver and exceded the limit at the wrong time/place.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

In fact, it was € 90 for 4 km/h :S... Technically, it's even worse, since I believe the ticket is actually € 180 (but is reduced by half if you pay quickly). Plus, it said I would lose one point from my licence, but as I have a UK licence this will not apply. If the speeding were really excessive, they have a right to ask me to trade in my UK licence for a French one so that they can remove points - or they could just confiscate my UK licence altogether. Which doesn't pose such a big problem, since you can get the DVLA to reissue one. The problem is when they take it away on the spot - you have no right to drive away in your vehicle and have to pay for your car/bike to be taken away, and pay to retrieve it, and I think you could even do jail time (although on this last point I am not sure), et cetera. But we are talking radically high speeds, not 4 km/h too fast...

I think it's steep as well. I don't know if it's something to do with where it is - perhaps it's in a school zone or something?? When I get a chance, I will google the precise location, since it is stated on the ticket. If I'm not mistaken, it's just coming out of a 70 zone, so I reckon it's an easy way to catch people out.

And Shroppy - lots of radars here capture just the front of the vehicle as well, but this was not one of them. Oh well.

I've got you beat. 53 in a 50 zone on the Promenade des Anglais :).

10 years of driving in Australia without a single speeding ticket. Two in my first three months in France.

And then, for contrast, on the mountain roads: I'm doing 80km/h on a nasty, twisty set of roads, and I get overtaken by trucks.

I don't know if they do this in France, but I know in Holland they do what is called Trajectcontrole.

Basically they take your average speed over a distance, if your averaghe speed is higher than the posted speed limit, you get a ticket.

(Looks like Belgium does the same thing, Dave)

Photo radar isn't about getting people to slow down, it's just about raising $$$ for the local authorities. There is a bridge I cross under on most days coming home from work. The bridge is supposedly under construction repairs. There are construction signs telling the drivers to slow down to 60 km/h. Problem is nobody ever works on the bridge. It's been at least 8 months since the last construction worker set foot on the sight. But that does not stop the authorities from using photo radar at the location to nab anyone who is going 1+ click over the posted 60 km/h construction zone speed limit.

Yep. And it's a very effective way to raise money.

I think I paid $175.00 CASH on the spot for 15 over in Wisconsin. I never have known any other place where the officer wants CASH on the spot. WUWT?

In France, if you have a foreign licence and you are stopped by cops for breaking traffic rules, you will have to pay cash on-the-spot as well. Or, if they haven't put it in their system yet, they will let you go with a warning because they can't be arsed to fill in the extra paper-work!!! :D

Why do I know? :S

How else is he going to make his boat payment?
Out of state in ILL they wanted cash. I could still fight it but cash acted as bond to make sure I showed up or it got payed. I was resigned to the cop hauling me in but he told me to keep looking. He got paid partly in nickles dimes and quarters off the floor.:P

I've had so many speeding tickets over the years, I’ve honestly lost count. By age 25 (in US) I had lost my license 5 times due to speeding tickets. Thankfully in UK, and Europe in general, you only have to watch for automated cameras (our police have better things to do, unlike their US counterparts).

A few tips and items learned over the years:

- In Switzerland, if you don’t pay your speeding ticket, the next time you visit, your passport is flagged and the kind gentleman has someone escort you to the nearest cash machine.

- In Indonesia, they can be bribed, but it takes forever and the guy never actually touches your money (after the long-winded discussion, he recoiled his hand when I reached out with some money; however he subsequently pointed to a box in the corner of the room where I could leave the cash).

- Average speed camera zones require the cameras getting your registration (license plate) at two points as they need both to do the math. So, when you see the cameras coming up you get right on the back of a van/truck to hide your plate or at least switch lanes abruptly to mess with their system.

- In the southern US, 115mph in a 55mph zone will end in 6mo license suspension no matter how good/expensive your lawyer is. But, you can easily use your mates address in the adjoining state to get a different state license to hold you over till you get your real license back.

- In the US, if you move more than a couple states away, they don’t generally have information sharing arrangements with further states. So hypothetically someone who had lost their licence 5 times for speeding (again hypothetically) can get a fresh license and a safe driver discount on their insurance in Illinois. ;)
