If a re-make of Point Break means the same as it did in the early 1990s, it will mean that I can quit the "real" economy" and work for another ten or fifteen years as a skydiving bum: sewing, packing reserves, writing for SKYDIVING Magazine, hucking tandems on weekends, teaching the first jump course, tossing pilot-chutes for IAD students, teaching the basics to Accompanied Freefall students, etc.

I normally hate 3D movies but Mad Max was awesome, hopefully this reboot will not be a disaster.

Having vision in only one eye, I've never gotten to experience the 3D thing. Back in the 50s I went to one. After a minute and a half I knew it wasn't working for me. I still had to sit there for an hour and a half because some one else had the car keys. My dad. I was 9 years old.

I suspect it won't have the same impact, due to the fact that the media landscape has broadened so significantly since then that video / film of "extreme" sports is widely accessible in a way that it wasn't back then. In the early 90s if you wanted to see skydiving footage, you watched the X Games, or a feature film or TV show that had skydiving in it, or you knew a skydiver. Maybe there'd be the occasional local news fluff piece or fatality report.

Now you can put "skydiving" or "BASE" into a Google search and spend the rest of your life looking at video and not run out. The well-produced proxy porn or the particularly gory incident story /video goes viral so even if you're not looking for it, it'll show up in your Facebook or Twitter feed.

It might attract a few new participants, but I'd be very surprised if the bump is anything like the original Point Break bump.

I'm thinking an even heavier emphasis on wing suit BASE. That's the big question I get from first-time jumpers now, after they're told no, they may NOT video their own skydive ("I want to fly one of those squirrel suits off a cliff! Can I start training for that?")

How long before they start coming to the DZ asking if they can do a wing suit tandem?

Original Point Break's skydiving scene and surf scene was bit of "Artzy"

the new one just goes, "BAHHHHHH!!!! PPPPHHHEHH!!!!"

Got to laugh at all the moaning over modern movies being too over the top after the original Point Break's bullshit, culminating in the chuteless exit and dropping the gun to pull. The writers must've been on a coke binge, shame on anyone who moans about the new one, it already looks more credible.

Yes we're going to see a lot of whuffos wanting to WS BASE. Bring on the WS Tandem!
