For the car guys

I took the motorcycle up Mt Evans today. I saw several of these, but I just happened to have the camera running when I encountered these two. Took me a bit to realize what I was seeing.;)

Camouflage.
It is a swirly black and white pattern.
Appears to be vinyl sheets.
I need to get a higher res camera;
This is only 720p.

Vinyl wrap. You are correct in that this is to camouflage. Not blend in with the background, but makes it far more difficult to determine the shape and curves of the body parts.

My guess is that these cars are a not-yet-released version.

That would be the general reason for doing this and especially since the designs might not be finalized.

And there are big bucks in leaking a new generation/design to the press.

Yep. Just like TMZ and paparazzi, the car porn magazines have their own version always on the look out for them rolling on the streets.

Whan you see this kind of camo car on the road, the design is finalized but not revealed to the public.

I would guess Mercedes (the round shape of the logo + front light shape ...)

Where I go in Spain to fly paragliders, the car companies use the road up above Granada to test - they often 'camouflage' new models so that people can't easily identify them.

Is it a high elevation or something?
Mt Evans here in CO has the highest paved road in the country (~14,000'), so I can see why it would be a good place to test for altitude-related issues.

Pretty much nothing is ever final until it's offered for sale.

It depends what you mean by design. The shape of the car is frozen long time before the first sale. Any idea of the lead time to launch and tune the toolings of the body in white ?
