Plane Crash at British Airshow Causes Multiple Casualties

Recommended Posts

I've always said that, given what these (highly skilled professionals) pilots do at airshows, it's amazing more crashes don't happen. Time after time, they make the absolutely incredible look easy.

It is indeed, a sad month for airshows. Especially from a PR perspective. :|

Can't believe the pilot survived!

He certainly must be in a bad way after that crash. I gather he's in an a medically-induced coma at the moment, and if he does wake up it will be to the knowledge that he's killed at least 11 people. That's pretty grim.

I see they've banned Hawker Hunter flights for the time being - that seems an odd thing to do considering it's a 60-year old design and this one crashed during an aerobatic manoeuvre, but I guess it's standard procedure.

The crash was less than a mile from my home in our local village.

The airshow is the highlight of the calendar for the locals and the thousands that visit to watch - its a charitable event that has raised more than 1.6mUSD for former pilots (including my late father)

One of the deceased was a former Paratrooper who spent his retirement driving wedding cars and was on his way to pick up the bride and groom.

knee jerk reactions at best,,,why not raise the altitude for manuvers ? It was not the design of the airplane that caused it to crash......[:/]

Exactly. It was pilot error. Like a hook turn too low. >:(

Wow.

'Misjudgement'...? [:/] That's one way of putting it.

Assuming this is right, what do people think the appropriate penalties are for the pilot?

If he'd JUST crashed the plane somewhere unpopulated, I could see (and agree) with him getting away with having his pilots license revoked, but having killed 11 people I'm guessing he'll be charged with involuntary manslaughter. (Accidentally killing someone without malice of forethought).

From what I can find, the penalty for manslaughter is very variable, but does carry stricter punishments is the act which caused the death was inherently risky or negligent - both of which may apply.
