Laying vs lying?

Can anyone tell me a definitive rule that I can ALWAYS follow?

I, for some reason, can never remember this rule. [:/]

It makes me want to never uses any version of this word. :D

And yes, if I'm telling an untruth, it's always lying.

I use it like this
Im laying carpet
Im lying on the ground

No reason or rule for me, just how i use the words

Gowlerk's link is helpful. 98% of the time, laying is transitive, and lying is intransitive.

I.e. you lay something or someone. The verb always has an object. You never lie something or someone. No object.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

People are always lying to get laid.

Sometimes they are kneeling to get laid. Or standing. Or even swimming or in freefall.

I get the standing, swimming and freefalling.

But is the kneeler the layer or the layee? And as to the lying who's most likely to be the liar and who the lyee?
"That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport."
