JerryBaumchen 1,047 #1 October 31, 2015 Hi folks, A remarkable insight I never thought of... The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married - Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Ernest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara, and of course Opie - all single. The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk. Just saying, Jerry Baumchen

muff528 3 #6 October 31, 2015 Some of my favorite episodes: The one featuring one of my flat-picking heroes, a very young Clarence White (maybe even playing his "big hole" D-28) along with brother Roland, et al. The ones when the Darlings came to town. The brothers are members of the Bluegrass band "the Dillards". The father was Denver Pyle, Uncle Jesse on "The Dukes of Hazzard". The episodes with James Best as a talented local boy who always seemed to get into trouble. He finally, with Andy's help, made it to the "big-time" as a guitarist for a traveling band. Best later became Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane in "The Dukes of Hazzard". I also liked the one with the two old ladies who were making moonshine and systematically eliminating their competition before inadvertently being "outed" by Opie. edit: "Roland", not "Randy". Got football on the brain today!

muff528 3 #15 November 3, 2015 BoomerdogYea but if I recall, Ernest T. Bass liked to throw bricks through windows. Bass wasn't married but he was crazy. He always came to town looking for a mate. So, Jerry's Mayberry marriage paradigm still holds.

(well, the Purvis part anyway!) And how do we know this? Because he had a girlfriend who got pissed at him and started yelling & throwing things. And said all three names, one at a time, with increasing annoyance. So, looks like the Mayberry paradigm overflowed with the actor to his next character! He was only really happy when he was single.
