chopchop 0 #77 November 9, 2002 alright, I confess, earlier this year, sitfly jump in Perris, track away on our backs, ProTrack batteries died, I lost altitude awareness, rolled over, ground was really, really big - I could see dirt clods, deployed my main just before my cypress deployed my reserve next to it. Landing 2 out sucks.. Anyway, I guess it was about 900 - 1,000' in the saddle around 500 wondering what went wrong.. chopchop gotta go... Plaything needs a spanking.. Skydivers are the only people I've really felt akin to, so anytime someone gets hurt or dies because of something as unpredictable as when and how their canopy will open, it is hard to take. It's good that you were honest, I guess, but it doesn't make your choice any better. And I want to restate, no one was being singled out. I know that there are people who do this for shits and grins. But it scares me, and always will. Some of these are accidents/emergencies, and lessons were learned. Some are intentional, and honestly relating their experiences. I wonder, though, how many of the folks who do this "for fun" have had serious malfunctions and/or cutaways, not on their low pull but otherwise? I dunno, but my early cutaway really put some serious respect into me for the ground, and a sincere desire to not go pushing the envelope much more than I absolutely have to. I know I err on the side of caution, and people jib me for it. But man, it's some scary shit we're talking about... For the record, my lowest intentional pull to date is 3,600. When Brenda saw the 1500-1300 altitudes on it, she crapped her pants. I had no idea. I have a friend that quit jumping 4 years ago and he says they always began deployment around 2000 not 3000 like we do now. voodew1 0 #87 November 9, 2002 Lowest for me and 21 other jumpers is 1200' lost an engine on the otter and the pilot called for emergency exit. In 30 seconds 21 people left. 2 jumpers pulled reserve out the door, 1 pilot chute wrapped around a neck which he pulled his reserve and 2 stayed in the plane(student & jumpmaster). Its my understanding that a reserve opens in around 500ft so dependent on circumstances there's no way i'd cutaway below 1000. That said I am always open by 2 grand or a little over.
