To all my fellow Americans, when you get a crazy hospital bill, call and ask for an itemized receipt. Most of the time they'll take this kind of shit off the bill. Recently spent some time in the ER for a broken bone. Bill went from $756 to $15 in a matter of minutes.

Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 requires any hospital taking payments from Medicare to treat all emergency room patients, regardless of ability to pay:

So what hospitals have done to recover their losses, is pad the bills of those patients who can pay. And since the emergency room is the defacto medical care for uninsured people in the US, the insured portion of the population was already footing the bill, even before ACA.

As long as we continue to have corporation after corporation trying to amass huge profits in our health care system, we'll continue to spend more money than any other civilized country for our health care. The profit motive is driving our costs to ridiculous levels. There are much better systems, but our legislative branch is already in the pocket of Big Medicine.
