Change is in the air....

Recommended Posts

We're more a part of skydiving than most people think. Skydiving has long been a prerequisite for getting into BASE. BASE jumping is simply a specialized discipline of skydiving. For the record, I'd rather see your BASE forum remain part of dz.com.

If it's the latter, I'll stop coding tonight.

Drop the keyboard and find something fun to do.

As much as they rebel against the idea, BASE jumpers are skydivers. We had far less issues in the sport of BASE when that was held to be true.

That's not a fair comparison. Too many other factors, besides skydiving involvement, have changed in time so it's impossible to decide to what effect skydiving involvement has affected BASE for better or worse.

Usually I'm pretty utilitarian, but in this case I am happier with an NPS law against BASE jumping than a USPA involved regulation program. At least as a platform for future policy.

From an ethical point of view, we have a lot more in common with climbers than we do with skydivers.

Personally, I'd like to see the RC, DZ and BJ account systems merged, and a single hub in which I can subscribe to particular forums. A list of the main areas with checkboxes so I can customize my own list of interests.

But I'm aware this is a free service, so I can only hope...

You are _so_ not alone in that desire. I've been hassling Sangiro to do that for quite a while now. :D

I think the technical hurdles are significant enough that it's going to take a while, though.

We are doomed.... here comes the epic merger of all three sites including video uploads, customized user settings complete with forum subscriptions, self-moderation that somehow miraculously works, and an online casino that would put partypoker.com to shame (bounce bingo anyone?)...

On that last note, maybe that's the ticket to getting legal BASE events that manage to be profitable enough to make a building owner's ears perk up.. spectators could bet on things; like who out of this 8-way will open lowest, or guess who will have the next 180, or how far will the next jumper land from the target.. the amish have been doing it at our dropzone for years :$

I would leave it the same. The convenience of having only one site to visit is what I think helped the Base zone put the nail in the coffin of blinc. The sports are interrelated, not withstanding some people's efforts to push the sport on those folks who have not prepared for it by skydiving. There are already competing stand alone base sites, and the traffic their is minimal.

I would like to see the ban list go away, a clean slate, and additional moderators, if only to not have to listen all the whining about moderation.

BASE is an offshoot of skydiving...

You sure it's not the other way round?

The Montgolfier brothers in France successfully tested a parachute out of a tower (building) as a safety device prior to making the first recorded hot air balloon flight in 1783. The first recorded parachute jump was what we today call a BASE jump and from a B no less.

There are measurements and a few more details of their parachute in a book I have at the loft called "Tales of the Caterpillar club. Jump!" by Don Glassman. The book contains the history of parachuting up until its publication in 1930.

Fausto? or someone else?

Apparently he claimed to make jumps from a tower in Venice in 1595, but these were never confirmed. Did the Chinese do something earlier? Those little Chinese fellas were way ahead in many things back in those olden days... :)
edit: to add after some google work:

Quote

He had examined Leonardo da Vinci's rough sketches of a parachute, and set out to implement a parachute of his own. A now-famous sketch of a parachute that he dubbed Homo volans appeared in the aforementioned book. Twenty years later, he implemented his design and tested the parachute by jumping from a tower in Venice in 1617. The event was documented some 30 years after it happened in a book written by John Wilkins, the secretary of the Royal Society in London.

Check out this Guru's soph.

"THE RISK OF CHANGE IS SEEN AS GREATER THAN THE RISK OF STANDING STILL
Making a change requires a kind of leap of faith: you decide to move in the direction of the unknown on the promise that something will be better for you. But you have no proof. Taking that leap of faith is risky, and people will only take active steps toward the unknown if they genuinely believe – and perhaps more importantly, feel – that the risks of standing still are greater than those of moving forward in a new direction. Making a change is all about managing risk. If you are making the case for change, be sure to set out in stark, truthful terms why you believe the risk situation favors change. Use numbers whenever you can, because we in the West pay attention to numbers. At the very least, they get our attention, and then when the rational mind is engaged, the emotional mind (which is typically most decisive) can begin to grapple with the prospect of change. But if you only sell your idea of change based on idealistic, unseen promises of reward, you won’t be nearly as effective in moving people to action. The power of the human fight-or-flight response can be activated to fight for change, but that begins with the perception of risk."

true, the general public remains change-phobic.
it makes change difficult. a period of establishing buy-in typically helps.

but the basic premise rests on people being risk adverse...
BASE jumpers risk adverse?
really?

Hey all,

While I'm more than happy to host the BASE community here on Dropzone.com I've received a lot of requests over the years to set up a site similar to this, but for BASE jumpers only. I've always thought it to be a good idea but never had the time to actually make it happen. We've been working away at this over the last few months and I'm happy to say we're pretty close to wrapping it up and launching the site.

I'll provide more detail as we get closer to the event. A few thoughts:

1) All the posts in the BASE Zone will be migrated over to the new site
2) Your account (username/password) will be migrated over so you can log in there with the same info as here
3) Your Dropzone.com account will continue to exist and you can use it as always
4) Private Messages and e-mail will not be migrated over
5) The BASE Zone will be shut down on Dropzone.com. A link to the forum will remain up but traffic will be directed to the new site.

The functionality on the new site will be similar to what we have on Dropzone.com. The site is actually based on the Rockclimbing.com platform, so browsing around there should give you a good idea of the types of features and functionality you should expect to see.

I'm hoping we will get this out within the next 2 weeks. Just wanted to give you a heads-up to set expectations. More to come. :)

Both features are active on the new forums, as they are being tested. There are, at this point, no plans to change them, so they'll pretty much appear in the same form they exist on Rockclimbing.com.

I'm gonna miss the B.A.S.E. forum.

Sometimes I think I'm crazy and should maybe be locked up to protect myself and society, but when I read posts about jumping from objects, I know that I'm completely normal.

But I see the need for more different sub forums. I'm sure B.A.S.E. is just as complex as skydiving.

I do hope you all will keep posting in the "jumping from planes" forums even if you get your own forum.

:)

Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet.

I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?

does that mean that my "subscriptions" and "watched threads" on the_base_zone at dz.com will still be accessible in the new forum? otherwise i may want to print them as long as the_base_zone still exists...

That's a question for Sangiro. I really don't know. The user data is going to be imported across to the new forums, as is the actual forum data (posts and threads), so if that data is part of the user profile, it'll probably come as well. But I don't know the mechanics of how it's stored, so I can't say.
