Warning - The Entire U.S. is Hot . . .

Recommended Posts

Senator Marty Golden is introducing a bill to make it a class D felony offense for those caught BASE jumping in the state of New York. I'm sure the law will pass and eventually other states will follow suite.

http://www.brooklyngraphic.com/site/tab6.cfm?newsid=17829722&BRD=2384&PAG=461&dept_id=552852&rfi=6

Go ahead, read the above, and come back. I’ll wait . . .

Well boys, it was a nice twenty eight year run.

I’ll remember those first few nights climbing KFI's tower at 3:00 in the morning with a (very) young Todd S. and Mark H. all of us giggling like school girls. I'll remember hiding out for hours in a downtown San Diego building just to escape a rent-a-cop and then walking down to avoid the possibility of getting the building hot. I'll remember how many times I dragged my tired butt downtown in the middle of the night to help out a newbie looking to get a BASE number.

I'll smile on a million things like jumping with Jakey (the author of "Groundrush") on his first building jump. I'll smile on all the solo building jumps I did and the lovely feeling of this was mine anytime I wanted it. I'll smile on the sea of faces I can recall, all of the jumpers who have come and gone over the years, all the excitement, all the laughs, and even all the tears.

I'll be proud of all the TV interviews I turned down, NBC, CBS, ABC, they all called me at one time or another, and still they call, and still I say no thanks. I'll be proud of writing thousands of posts over the years, always trying to add something to the sum total of our knowledge. I'll be proud of always subtly warning you that BASE jumping was precious because so many of you had never lived in a world without it. I'll be proud of telling you of all the ways the generation that preceded you went to great lengths to keep BASE jumping underground where it belonged.

But I can see the freedom, simplicity, and beauty of BASE wasn't enough for you. I can see the fact you could go and jump any night you wanted wasn't enough for you and I can see the knowledge you could do something no one else could do was something too big to be contained inside your own heads.

So be happy with your bridge in Potato Land and your once a year fling in West Virginia. Be happy knowing the people starting out in BASE today won't enjoy the extent of freedom you took for granted before you threw it away. Be happy in the knowledge that you were so much bigger than the ones who came before you that you thought nothing about selling the sport out for 15 minutes of fame. Be happy and continue spewing your "look at me videos" all over the internet and trying to "explain" BASE to the masses as you sound more lame, juvenile, and idiotic every time you do it. BASE was a gift, and you shat upon it . . .

A felony is a life altering thing. It won't matter much to us old timers, as we always knew the true cost of BASE was the real possibillity of the death penalty so we'll still bang one out from time to time. But, it will make younger jumpers think twice. So you all better start getting handy with needle and thread as making BASE jumping a felonious offense will certainly finish off the BASE gear manufacturers in this country.

And you'll find no refuge elsewhere as slowly the rest of the world will also turn against us.

Nope, it's over. Maybe not this year, maybe not next, but soon, and forever. I still don’t actually believe it myself yet, I mean the enormity of it, and how you managed it, but all you f-ing glory hounds got the entire United States hot . . .

Maybe my memory fails me, but I thought that in Groundrush Jakey talks about his first Building jump from a well known B here in the UK...

He must have had a long Static line then on the London B... but then again, it may just be my memory failing me....

I am not trying to be obnoxious, but from my memory of his book I am just trying to remember certain aspects that stood out in my mind...

I always liked the reference to the gun on the jump...

edit: I am now going to find it and re-read it again.... I found he exactly describes things that I could never put into words..... cracking read.... If any of you have not been able to get a copy, then try some more.... you wont be sorry

Don't even start that. It wont do any good. This whole thing is being fueled by the cameras. That's all he wants. Honestly has any one ever herd of this guy before even in NY? He is just rideing the wave that we our selves created. There is no way to fight this. You can't make any argument agenst him. The law will pass for lack of opesition. We are the only ones that care. If we fight it then it just draws more attention to him. He wins. It's what he wants. The bigger we make this the worse it will be. The only chance we have is that it will not get any atention and will just die out and not spread beyond NY. But once the precedent exest we are fucked and you can exspect to see it sited in every case to come.

There are two edges to that sword. The more it is seen the more accepted what we do will become. On the other hand there remains the perseption that all this is illeagal. high profile illeagle jumps like this one are the ammo they need to blow us out of the water. Honestly the best thing that could have happened would have been for him to lose his case. God forbid that we should win. Don't ever try to tell a cop that there is nothing he can charge you with. They'll just pass a new law. They will never be satisfied till they can arest any one they want upon there whem.

I don't know much about US law but I just googled "Class D Felony" and it came up with things like rape, sexual assault and "Attempted Use of a Child in a Sexual Performance"?!!?

WTF?

Chicken Licken springs to mind reading this post.

Calm yourself mr DG. Things really haven't changed that much, and please stop re-writing history and even worse predicting the future (badly).

If i recall, Carl was no stranger to hawking his BASE films. If i recall, you boys took the piss and lost El Cap[#] and I could've sworn i've seen oodles of footage of Phil Smith, Carl and co dayjumping antennas and buildings, not content were they under cover of darkness (hey maybe it was just for the video). And I've never met you, but i know what you look like.....how is that possible? Maybe you've had your 15 minutes already.

The rest of the world won't inevitably follow suit. Who looks to the US for justice and fairness? Most of europe have felt the pain of what it is to be occupied and oppressed and have their freedoms seized from them. They will not throw away their rights and liberty easily. Not even in the so-called fight against terrorism.

It saddens me to see how more and more your tone slides towards embitterment and phoney sentamentalism and further away from the notion of brotherhood which you have championed for so long.

I have just had a flick through groundrush and I am pretty sure that Jakey had freefalled a B before he did his first B with you.

So am I wrong, or are you wrong? If you need to reference it, it is Chapter 10...

The legislation would, however, allow the city and the building owner the right to grant a waiver under certain circumstances.

We must come together and fight this. This man must be stopped. We must send as many letters from as many people as possible. I am so sorry everyone, this is not how any of this was suppose to go down. This is is a fight for freedom in a country that's motto is land of the free...

No, I don't think the sky is falling just yet, but at the least it should be a wakeup call to the 'look at me' jumpers, if they are even capable of waking up. Sounds to me like the guy that wrote the article thinks it's a joke, and likely that alot of other people voting on that bill will agree. I can understand all the piss and vinegar, if I thought it was over I'd say the same thing.

but,
Since when was BASE jumping in the same feild as child porn?

Comments like that make me sad. I know it's just one guy, and that there are plenty of people who think otherwise. But that there even exists one person who would say such a thing, it's mind boggling.

Nobody that has ever seen me jump has had a reaction other than sheer joy and excitement about the fact that such a thing would be possible (cue sarcastic comment about how my poor jumping skills do in fact frighten people). Even the ones that weren't supposed to see me but just happened to be walking their dog in the middle of the night would come up and say the nicest things.

These days, it seems I'm one of the few Europeans that loves America. I'm aware I have a romantic Randian idea of the United States, but nonetheless it's a country that has a special place in my heart. Sadly, the sheer symbolic impact of such a law, should it ever pass, would leave me no choice but to move to Davos.

Luckily we still have Canada. That reminds me, I have a packjob to finish. I'm off to my legal cliff...

Can you elaborate on that? I remember a certain quote about having BASE all squared and hummed away like any other past-time such as bowling and horseback riding. What happened in between? For all the bitching and whining I do on these forums, I still think the BASE community on the whole is a great one that treats the sport with the historical values it deserves.

“These senseless acts deplete the financial resources of building owners, businesses and the city,” [Golden] continued.

Can someone explain this to me? I really don't get it. My only thought was something to do with increased security, if there was a jump that happened on their building. Seems like a big stretch if that is what he was describing.

Is there *realistically* any point in us foreigners sending letters?

Would they file letters from non US citizens straight in the trash as irrelevant?

Exactly. Seems like another bozo politican that doesn't have a clue what he's talkin about.

Golden’s law would create a class D felony for reckless endangerment for any individual jumping off a typical BASE structure five floors or higher.

Shannon and Brians deaths were BIG time national news. That guy getting hung up on the guy wires in Nor Cal was BIG time national news. Jeb's arrest was BIG time national news.

Maybe it's about time for something positive from the BASE community to make BIG time national news...

People have been driven by the premise that ANY publicity is bad for BASE...thus ensuring that ONLY NEGATIVE publicity reaches the general population.
