:( I was one of his co-workers, and I considered him one of my friends. I remember how excited he was about getting his new suit and canopy. We would talk about it often at work, and he would show me videos of places he jumped. I was even going to fly him up to skydive one day. Now I'll never get to do it.

He was a great guy, and a good friend. He will be missed.

When someone in our community is taken from us, it's very different than for most groups of people. We play a serious game, where the cost to ante up is your life. To even step into the arena we know, you have to lay your life on the table, quite literally. But once you've tasted the thrill, and experienced life on the other side, your life becomes something worth risking.

BASE jumping doesn't make your life easier to risk, it shows you new area in your imagination and spirit where before there were only boundaries or dark shadows. Because BASE gives us so much and contributes so many positive things to our lives, we go back.

Once you become a BASE jumper, not someone who BASE jumps, but a pure and true BASE jumper, everything is different. Life is more precious and fulfilling. We become better poeple and we share in a sacred bond.

This is why it hurts so much more when one of our brothers or sisters makes their final exit.

We can tell stories and laugh about something that person did to make us smile, we can share in our grief together. In the end, we go on. It's what we would want our friends to do if the tables were turned.

But for now, we can cry.... [:/]

Well spoken. In honor of other lost brothers, here's am email that DW circulated in early August last year. . . it was one of the last I received form him before he left us behind.

Peace,

I know most of you have read the attached email
before, but non-the-less it's interesting to read
again today (and it's about the only coherent email we
ever received from Nik that was longer than two
lines).

Other Nik quotes that randomly come to mind:

"I think she fancies me"
(About any female he had just met - mostly waitresses)

"First pint and ground crew on us"
(In regards to potential visiting BASE jumpers. In
actuality it was pint: yes, ground crew: no)

"I hate people"
(When he was on one of his manic tirades)

"You owe me big time"
(When he did anything for you)

"Cheers Love" & "Up ya bum"
(Usual drinking sayings)

"This has got bad idea written all over it"
(When he was about to do anything fun)

Our fallen brother was my closest friend for the last four years. We were roommates and learned to skydive together. The impact he has had on my life cannot be described. He was able to share his thirst for life and adventure with me, enhancing my life forever - and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I will miss you so dearly, bro.

Reading the words of this thread has been such a comfort to me and I wanted to express my sincere gratitude. Thank you so much.
