Rig hanging?

Before anyone says it, yes i've done lots of searching

Its winter, so i'm not using my rig for a wee bit. Is it better to have it just sitting on the floor leaning against a wall, or should i get anal and build something to hang it off?

Whats better for it, hanging or sitting?

I noticed with it sitting, the weight of the harness drooping slightly bent the excess in the reserve reip cord, which is probably not a good thing.


Whats everyones thoughts?

Good question, its been about 3 weeks since I have had a chance to use mine (damn winter winds). I keep mine in a suitcase up against the wall, better to hang?

Get yourself some 6-inch diameter PVC pipe, which is available at just about any plumbing or large chain home improvements store.

Cut about an 14 to 18-inch long piece (approximately shoulder/yoke width).

Center and drill a hole through the middle of the pipe.

Place a 1/2-inch hook bolt through the hole with a nut and washer on each side and tighten down. A hook bolt looks like an "eye" bolt with the "eye" opened up (looks like a question mark...?).

You can use this to hang your rig in just about any standard closet, and the large diameter of the PVC keeps your shoulder webbing, risers and cables all nice without kinking anything.

I use these to store my rigs and to hang rigs to dry after washing them, and I don't have to worry about the PVC reacting or rusting due to the moisture from the wet rig.

I live with 2 other skydivers and we store 2 rigs belonging to our uni skydiving club too so we generally have arround 6 or 7 rigs arround the house.

I went to our local DIY store and bought some tubuar steal table legs. They had ready made brackets at the top so I bolted them straight onto the wall with some large wall bolts. A shelf above holds helmets, the other corner has a clothing rail with jump suits on... and hey presto - our living room looks like a DZ shop, all nice and homely.

When my housemate sold his old canopy the guy who came to collect it thought we were running a kit store.

I'll post a pick of my rigrack later if I get the chance.

I leave my rig in my carry bag on the floor.

I suppose it does not matter one way or the other though.

One thing I do, If I know that I am not jumping for some time I take the main out of the dbag and take tension off the rubber bands.
As well as take the pc out of it's pocket to take tension off the elastic of the boc pouch.

The parachute system is your life boat, and you should never think you are anal for taking care of that.

If you know that you're not going to be jumping for a while, it's a good idea to unpack your canopy (or canopies if it's going to be a loooong time). Store the unpacked canopies in dark plastic trash bags, without contact with metal (grommets, links, etc.) in a climate controlled room (a hall closet is usually best).

Of course, this means you have to repack before you head back to the DZ, but it's the best storage method to keep your gear from rotting, becoming dis-colored, etc.

*Note: most damage to your gear will come from contact with metal, rubber and moisture.

Well, I hang my rig, however, RWS highly recommends that you do NOT hang a Vector3. They say it messes up the riser covers, bending the covers and such.

So apparently not every rig is safe to hang.

It never hurts to contact the manufacture on questions about your gear. Since they're the end all on the stuff about that rig (usually), they know they stuff and what to do with it.

Heck I'd have to bolt up another rung on the rig-rack... but visiting skydivers are always welcome on the sofa if they find themselves in Bristol over night.

I think i'll go for hanging, but will e-mail sun path first. I'll let you all know what they say

The legs were about a fiver each from B&Q - the wall bolts are arround 50p each so if you have a drill you could whack one up for about £7.50. There are probably a lot of easier ways of doing it though - this is more permanent and looks 70% cooler.

okay. how much do you love me?

i called one of my friends from sunpath (designer) and asked him what sunpath recommended.

he said, "we don't recommend storing your equipment. we recommend you move to a place with better weather." we both got a good laugh out of that one (especially since he was from the UK as well).

then he said that "sunpath recommends you hang the rig if it's to be stored for any length of time."

i know that sunpath is closed until next week, so that's the quickest way for me to get you an answer.

If I'm not jumping for a few weeks, I hang it in my closet, I use regular plastic coat hangers (5 of them)
