maretus 0 #27 January 13, 2014 Kirby46I've decided that I want to fly wingsuits and have booked my AFF course in March. However I've read that you need to complete 200-500 jumps before you can try a wingsuit. This seems a long way off and is this a strict requirement or just a guideline? Also I wanna get a helmet for when I start the AFF, I like the look of an open face helmet with goggles. Do some guys use snowboard helmets as that's what they look like in videos. You can do as everyone has suggested or then of course there is this : http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4482864#4482864http://www.ufufreefly.com

Kirby46 0 #29 January 13, 2014 Yeah it'll be done before the first jump. ;) Referring back to a previous question, do any of you guys fly in the alps in summer? I'd be up for coming along to see some wingsuit action.

Klassen 0 #34 January 15, 2014 I would say to get your hands on skydive manuals. They have a lot of information on the skydive progression and will assist in your licensing. They are available through your parachuting association. Learn to fly your body well, you can do some sick flying without a wingsuit man. Then after a few 100 jumps you will have your chance. There is a lot more going on up there than we think at the dream stage that's the reason for the rules before jumping in a sleeping bag. Good luck. Divalent 104 #35 January 15, 2014 Is this the type of flying you want to do? http://vimeo.com/18150336 It's a couple of years old, but the 13 wingsuiters shown in the video were the very best of the best at the time.
johnmatrix 21 #36 January 15, 2014 As others have mentioned you're a long way off wingsuiting, but booking AFF is the first step. Start jumping, keep jumping, keep your eyes and ears open, learn as much as you can, and you'll get there. :)

When I was wingsuiting a lot, had about 350 wingsuit jumps in less than 2 years (and 0 base), I was sortof planning to go wingsuit basejumping... Especially after a heli and a balloon wingsuit jump went smoothly. Was talking to James Boole about the how and when. I chickened out wised up though, as wingsuit base jumpers were dieing left and right it seemed. And that was even before proximity flying became so hot as it is these days. ciel bleu, Saskia

I don't watch videos of accidents. I know they happen and lots of people die but if I consume myself with negative images I'd never get out of my bed in the morning, let alone want to fly wingsuits. I race downhill mtb's and visit the alps frequently and track day superbikes and have had some nasty crashes in my time but I still don't even watch crash videos of those sports. My mates all watch them and then get pissed off because they can't ride fast. Your brain goes into self preservation mode. That's how I see it anyway. Anyway you have your AFF and many years ahead of your to build skills before even thinking about proxy flying and am sure you will see plenty in the meantime if you hang around any DZ in the rain.Dont just talk about it, Do it! Videos of accidents are one of the best ways to understand the risk and prepare yourself for your inevitable "oh sh*t" moments. They also help shape your decision-making and judgement. My aggressiveness was dialed back (in a big way) after a friend died on a WS BASE jump. Read the BFL. Ignorance is death, not bliss, in this game. Kirby46 0 #47 January 15, 2014 Right I watched the video of accidents where the Russian guys get it all wrong. I've taken your comments in and will use this videos to understand why they go wrong and learn in a positive way. Going back to the Russians in the video; what a bunch of idiots! That clearly shows little or no training and why you need to be an extremely skilled pilot/base jumper to achieve controlled proximity flights. I got an idea of just how hard it is by watching level 1 AFF jumps too. ;)

In that case it shows how it can go so badly wrong even when you're experienced. It just looked insanely stupid though. I suppose all accidents do.
