I was there jumping for two weeks while visiting relatives in Boise. I really liked this place and got to jump 5-6 days. They have a twin Cessna 206 but I only jumped out of the supercharged Cessna 182 (which is very fast). Everybody was super friendly and helped me out with my packing skills. They were also offering the canopy course I needed while I was there so got that done. You might have to wait around a little to fill up the 182 but I did get up to 5 jumps a day. A great little place in the Boise area-Highly Recommend!

I visited SkyDown on my Quest to jump in all 50 States. I was able to make a jump within one hour of arriving so that I could get back on the road. Denise was a first-class expediter and she is genuinely involved in providing a great experience for transient jumpers. I appreciated everything about this operation.

Main chute did not open!!

On June 4 my girlfriend and I both did a tandem skydive at 10,000 ft for her 40th birthday.  This was our first jump for both of us so neither of us knew what to expect.  We were in the second group of three groups to jump.  The plane goes up, people jump, plane lands, repeat.  When it was our turn to jump my girlfriend went first, I went second.  Falling through the sky everything was great, exactly as I imagined.  I knew the main chute was supposed to deploy somewhere around 5,000 ft.  As we dropped, I was in the moment, I didn't really realize how low we had gotten.  Finally, a chute deployed and we quickly descended.  We came down pretty hard in a weed filled area close to the runway of the airport, but neither of us, myself nor the tandem jump instructor, were seriously injured, just some abrasions and scratches.  We were nowhere near where we were supposed to land, the parachute time was less than 20 seconds and was supposed to be more like 2 or so minutes and we came down fast and hard so I knew something went wrong.  I asked my instructor and he explained what had happened.  The main chute didn't open.  The reserve chute deployed when the reserve chute's automatic activation device (AAD) deployed the reserve.  He was rattled and his hands were shaking.  Keep in mind, this is a very seasoned instructor.  My impression is that he'd performed thousands of jumps.  He said he'd had several "cut aways" in his life, but nothing quite like this.  It wasn't until the next couple of days after doing my research I fully grasped what happened.  Main chutes fail 1 in 1000, reserve chutes almost never fail.  Statistically, I was never in much danger, but I still don't know, nor may I ever, why the AAD had to deploy the reserve and it wasn't deployed manually.  I suspect the reserve ripcord wasn't working either, but I can't confirm.  I'm thankful for the AAD though, it saved our lives.

You would think this would be the end of my review.  It's not.  What happened above was only the beginning.

The worst part was how myself, the tandem jump instructor and my girlfriend were treated afterward by the Skydown Skydiving owners.  After we landed in the weed filled area about 10 minutes later the pilot landed the plane and he drove over to us in his truck.  His first and only question was, "Where's my chute?"  He was referring to the main chute that cut away when the reserve deployed.  The skydive instructor replied, "I don't know" and the pilot yelled, "Fu$k!" called the instructor an amateur and some other colorful words and immediately drove off, I guess to look for his chute.  Later, the wife of the pilot (the other owner) drove up to collect us.  She was nice and asked about us, but basically acted like nothing out of the ordinary just happened.  After we got back to the hangar I felt I deserved some sort of refund or compensation for my skydive not going according to plan to say the least.  Long story short, the pilot was up in the face of my girlfriend, wagging his finger at her yelling obscenities.  The wife of the pilot, although very off in her affect, stayed calm.  We tried to work with them, but all they would do is refund our videography.  That's fine, we didn't want it anyway.

I believe there is a fundamental safety issue with Skydown Skydiving.  If you google them you'll find they are being sued for how they employ their team of skydive instructors and chute packers.  I could write pages on this, but I believe this employment structure is the root cause of the safety concern.  Packers, are paid by the chute.  Chutes are reused between groups.  If they are busy, they are hurrying.  Mistakes are made.  I believe my main chute didn't open because the packers made a mistake hurrying to repack the first group's chute.  Quality control is seriously lagging.

If you do decide to give Skydown Skydiving a chance, I implore you, don't go when they are busy.  If something goes wrong, and you do live through it, don't bother to expect anything like good customer service.  As rare as these events are, even for Skydown, you'd expect them to realize they should treat people well when things don't go well, but they don't.  I do hope they read this review and make changes to how they employ their chute packers and tandem jump instructors and get some better quality control in place, before someone dies.

My Dh's tandem was all of 30 seconds of freefall, and the Tandem master spiralled all the way down not giving him any time to enjoy the experience.
My jump was with gear that fit very poorly, they only had one set of goggles that was not tore up, and I sat there and watched there packer pack up a tandem rig totally incorrect! It was after I brought it to the attention of another guy whom worked there that he went and corrected the packer!
I also had video footage taken as a keep sake for both of our jumps....we had to call numerous times to get my Dh's video which cost us $100!!! The footage was awfull, they barely got up to where you could see his face, and it was blury.
I have yet to recieve my video and it has been over a month!
Over all this was a poor experience, with people at the end of the day who really did care about their customers.

This place is great. Wanna jump? They've got you. Wanna learn? They've definitely got you.

The owner Paul is an awesome dude that will give you a great ride to altitude. He's very knowledgable of the sport and if you ask him the right questions he'll give you some amazing advice from experience (Over 30 years!!!).

Come on out and get started on your certification, you know you want to! ;)

Jumped here about 10-15 times as a fun jumper, and is always a very pleasant experience. The members on staff are very respectful and will help you with any issues that might come up. I will definitely be coming back!

Paul and Denise were wonderful hosts, Tom was exceptionally knowledgeable, and local jumpers were quick to accept a visitor. As I pursue jumping in all 50 states, Sky Down was a great place to jump in Idaho. I was able to get my snow wings as well as Idaho wings from Sky Down at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend this outfit and will surely return!

I was in Caldwell for a class reunion. The weekend was a little slow, not a lot of people, but I enjoyed my time with Paul (DZO) and everyone. They have a 402 which was great to jump from and we (they) organized a cross-country jump which was a blast. Totally randomly, the exit spot was over the house I lived in when I was in high school. I don't get over there often, but when I do, I will have my rig and stop and jump again.

I was the tandem instructor on the jump below. I don't now how much closer I can get on a face when doing a handcam. When leaving the plane at 10k and pulling at 5 your only going to get about 30 seconds. As for student gear we do have 25 rigs and 15 different types of canopies and as for a fit it wasn't designed specifically for her body. As for the pricing she didn't go through us, she WENT THROUGH SKYRIDE!!!

He offered to call some guys to ge a load together for me. again WOW!. I declined , was a long day anyway. the next day again I call late in the day....6:30 or so but just get an answeing machine, didn't leave a message figuring everyone had jumped. well about 5 or so minutes later my phone rings ...its paul! he says "were gonna make a coupla more jumps come on out" I told him not to wait since my rig was at the hotel . He tells me to go get it & come out. so I did. met some great guys. ( randy, rocky,& bob) all who had waited for me to get on the sunset load. what a great skydive !!! nothing overly spectacular (unless you like beautiful scenery & clean crisp air). THANX again Paul & Denise. ya wanna a great skydive experience in Idaho...visit skydown. I will again....probably tomorrow ;)

I had a grate time at this dropzone. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though I have low jump numbers I was made to feel right at home. The C402 is a fun plane, it is very fast to altitude and also a comfortable ride. I drove seven hours to this DZ so I could get some new years jumps in, and it was well worth the drive. I will definitely be back

The staff at Skydown are awesome. Whether you are a beginning or licensed skydiver you are welcomed with open arms at the DZ. Everyone is willing to help out and safety is the number one priority. Skydown has the largest twin engione jump plane (C 402) in Idaho and it is at the DZ 365 days a year!

I've jumped at the other places in the valley and even in the Seattle area and had the best experience at Skydown. They are equiped with a bigger plane all year round which makes the ride up much more comfortable and the exit a lot easier.
I've brought friends and clients out to do tandem jumps. Their video crew is simply amazing! Skydown accomodated us at night for a sunset jump when no other drop zone would.
The people are very informative and willing to help. Their contageous excitement and eagerness to jump makes this the best drop zone in the valley.
