Skydive San Diego is located next to beautiful Otay Lake reservoir. On the climb to altitude, you will see the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego and Mexico. The winds here are some of the most consistent in the world, usually 4-8 out of the west. Perhaps this is one of the reasons the United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Marine Corps conduct their training here. Block discount tickets are also available. If you're looking to do a tandem jump, you'll find yourself paired with a licensed, professional instructor.  No experience required and after completing the training program, you can expect a 13,000 foot exit followed by a magnificent freefall and parachute flight which looks over the Pacific Ocean and Baja California. Fun jumpers can acquire jump tickets at competitive prices while enjoying the Super Twin Otters and Blackhawk Caravan.

Skydive San Diego is a full-service skydiving facility with multiple training buildings, deluxe packing lofts, a grass landing area, a BBQ deck and patio, and incredible scenery to match! Unlike some outfits that will depart a public airport and land you in a field miles away requiring a van ride back to your friends, Skydive San Diego is set up to takeoff and land right in the same place, where your friends can watch!

Pack area is nice and clean and in the perfect location relative to the landing area which is super grassy. Staff was helpful, caring, and professional. The initial check-in was top of the line among DZ's. Locals have been soo awesome to talk to and jump with. Plenty of experience around and a willing to share. The vibe is amazing.

There was plenty of tandems there but they were still pumping out fun jumpers. Couldn't believe how many attractive women were there.

Only issue, which wasn't as big of an issue as I thought was the lack of actual bathrooms. They had plenty of porta potties but they were very well maintained and very clean. Could have more to provide in food and drinks but its cool.

This DZ is seriously awesome and a total hidden gem out there.

I visited Skydive San Diego two times while home for the holidays this year. I am a student jumper from a tiny DZ in the Midwest, so this was my first time at a large DZ. I had 13 jumps when I arrived and wanted to cross off some more of my license requirements. I contacted them in advance because I was no longer current (our jump season having ended at beginning of November) and was able to talk to DZO Blake about where I was in my progression and how to go about getting some jumps in at SDSD while I was home.

Upon my arrival, everything was very professional and smooth. They are set up for tandems and fun jumpers both, so have a nice big area for filling out that first time paperwork, and then off to the front desk where they checked my log book, took my USPA card, and got me set up with a coach for my recurrency jump. The staff was very friendly and happy to answer any/all of my newbie questions. Always with a smile and lots of enthusiasm. I loved Sarah working the manifest window and calling out all sorts of fun load number rhymes. There was a happy atmosphere all around, right from check in, which makes a huge difference to the nervous first time jumper or new-to-the-DZ student.

I worked with two different coaches on that first day and both were very competent, friendly, and professional. They were happy to work with me on those license requirements that still needed learning and we signed off everything that I'd hoped to. The only down side to coming on a busy day is that you do have to wait a bit for a coach, since it tends to also be the coaches who handle tandems and video. If you were to come on a non-holiday weekday, you'd probably have your pick.

Gear rental was a simple process and very well organized. The gear was all in good condition and even as a student flying something brand new, I found it comfortable. For smaller gals, the rigs that they have are all quite large, so that was the only less than perfect part of the gear rental equation, but I was still able (just!) to reach my pilot chute handle, so it was all good.

Load organizing is quick and efficient, and they seem to always have plenty of space for fun jumpers along with the tandems. The planes are comfortable and get you up to 13,000 in less than 15 minutes. When doing solo jumps, I found the other fun jumpers to be friendly and ready with a word of advice, encouragement, or a smile for the student. They still had their cliques, for sure, but that's to be expected when you're an unfamiliar face on the scene. Any question that I asked was answered with a smile and my fellow fun jumpers helped to organize my position in the load to keep me safe and out of traffic both in free fall and under canopy.

I didn't have my own rig there, but the packing areas were numerous, shaded, and all on soft mats. Weather tends to be pretty consistent (sunshine!) with a nice light wind from the west, so there aren't many days that you'd be weathered out. And views from altitude are simply SPECTACULAR. The Pacific, downtown San Diego, the lake, the mountains. You have to avoid getting caught up in the view and keep an eye on that alti!

Started my AFF in August and besides having the luck of getting injured during my first jump, I can only speak positive about this DZ.
The Staff (specifically Sarah and the Girls at the Check In) are extremely friendly, even when the weekends are busy.

The Instructors I had (Tom, Alex and JT to just name a view) are EAGER to make you succeed and help wherever and however they can, once you built a rapport with them , they will be helping even if they don't do your jump, I am now at the Point to get my A-License, I would call myself not a most talented flyer and had many moments where I was about to stop - they always "picked me up" and got me back into the game - looking forward to be back in August.

The DZ Manager Blake runs a good and very safe operation, he seems to be personally very involved and will call people out that do stupid things - it is great to see someone to be that involved in his DZ.

Packers are also nice - overall I would recommend this DZ to anyone who is getting into the Sport, the Weather , the Winds and the whole Dropzone seems to be the perfect match for someone who likes a safe and easy setup !

Read some military guys review on skydive San Diego and felt I needed to write a review. I have been jumping for 6 years, teach AFF and I am an avid BASE jumper.
I spent the last few days in California and had one of my best experiences showing up to a new drop zone. I recieved an open welcome, great briefing on the drop zone and handed a cold beer right after last load.

Let me just give you a quick overview of myself. 5 year skydiver primarily military free fall. Over 200 jumps. I have jumped at many different drop zones all over the country. Never have I encountered such a lack of professionalism. I hate to call someone out but if there is no accountability, then there can be no correction of shortfalls. The young lady Candace at the drop zone was by far, the worst Manifest/customer service rep for a drop zone I have encountered. Here is my story.

Like I said, I have over 200 jumps, a majority are military freefall, so I never needed to upgrade my A-license to a C... until now.

My best friend and I were down in San Diego for a work trip. I was not planning on jumping while I was there initially. When my best friend decided to get his A-lic while down there I decided to go with him to get some jumping in and get my C-lic as I am now no longer just a military jumper. So I went with him as he was already most of the way through his program at SSD.

I completely agree with USPA recommendations for flying cameras, currency etc. Thats not where my issue comes up. My issue comes up with being told verbatim: "Just because you have an A-license, doesn't mean you know how to skydive." This was in the first 5 minutes of me being through the door. Now, my plan was to get current and knock my c-license knocked out while I was there. For this girl to talk to me like that was appalling. Like I said, when I show up to a drop zone I expect to go through a certain amount of vetting to make sure I am who I say I am. I did not have my logbook on me and was not in currency anyways, so I had zero issues with doing a currency dive. I knocked that out and received my logbooks via FEDEX the next day.

The next time we showed up to jump not TWO days later, this girl treated us like she had never seen us before, and was just as rude to us as days earlier. I knocked out my C-lic test and check dives and expedited my card from USPA. We continued to jump for the next week and a half. The other girls at the front desk Heather, Lindsay were more than helpful and actually very impressive. More so, since we then knew who to deal with and who NOT to. Im not saying she is worthless, Im just saying she shouldn't be working with people as customer service or manifest. If my best friend hadn't been striving to get his A-lic signed off, I would have turned around and walked right out as soon as she started in with the attitude. I can only hope management is made aware of what obviously all of the staff admittedly knows about her conduct and personal character.

Now, aside from her. The dropzone is absolutely gorgeous, probably THE most scenic and breathtaking sunset spots to skydive in the US. The weather was rocking and we were only weathered out two days out of two weeks for weather. Coming from the Pacific Northwest, I would take them odds any day.

If your going to skydive San Diego and you are an out of town jumper, beware! Specifically Candice who usually runs manifest but also works the front desk. She puts my ratings for friendliness down to a 1! Bi-polar doesnt begin to describe how this person treats people she doesnt recognize. Over a three week period I shelled out around 2g's to jump with them showing my face during the week but still got the treatment as if I had just kicked her favorite animal. The other front desk girls Lindsey, Heather were awesome. And most of the instructors were friendly, but still a couple guys had the "I got a thousands of jumps attitude" If you visit this DZ you will be able to spot these instructors right away. If it wasnt for Candice running manifest with her "good and bad days attitude" towards friendly paying customers then I would have definately gave this review a 4-5 for professionalism and vibe and an overall 5 for the DZ. So to break it down if she hadnt been there this place would be awesome! Good luck Alan "Buzz" Fink on National Director!

I did my first ever skydive, AFF, and got my A-license here at SSD. The staff is awsome, even after completing my A the instructors are more than willing to help you out with whatever you need (tips tricks, they even let me try some of their gear). The planes are good clean and are safe, the dz is very well maintained and very professional. The weather almost always cooperates, but it all depends on the time of year, wind is usually very consistent and generally mild. Overall i love this place the people and the flying. Blue Skies see you up there.

I did my first AFF jumps back in 2005-6, so I can only talk for that period, I have no idea how it is now.

My bad experience was with a very rude instructor, a guy who used to jump with short camo pants, don't know the name, before to send me to the plane, he got pissed because I didn't do a safety check to my rig(never instructed on how to do it) and I still remember that he opened the main closing loop grunting something about who the F*** packed that rig, of course I had a very tight line twist malfunction, 8 times.
Anyway that was my bad experience, so I gave up on skydiving for years before to go back and complete it in another DZ.
I definitely want to try to go back with my A license and see what's going on.

Being a new A license can be a bit overwhelming when visiting a new dropzone. Upon arrival at Sky Dive San Diego (Mid week.) I was promptly directed to a very serious but friendly dropzone orientation and safety briefing. The staff was patient and friendly. I was traveling by myself to the dropzone, but had no problem meeting new people to jump with. My A license was completed at Skydive Utah. I have also visited Sky Dive Elsinore. I certainly would like to return to Skydive San Diego regularly. It is a safe, fun environment with a friendly experienced staff. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I was just here for a day and had a really good experience. Almost everyone was very friendly, there were no hassles and it was very easy to manifest. It has a very small-dz feel. They charge $25 per jump ticket, but pack jobs are cheap--just $5. The port-a-potties are a downside, for sure.
I enjoyed the view from altitude--interesting to see the cars lined up at the Mexican border from up high! Beautiful view of the ocean. There aren't many good places to land if you land off, but there should be no reason to land off--the airport is so easy to see, and the pilot spots by GPS...I had no problem at all landing on target, and I am a fairly new jumper.
There are a lot of holes in the ground on the landing area, like gopher holes or something...watch out, I wouldn't want to land with a foot in one of them!
Extremely convenient to the city--just a short drive!

Made 4 jumps and loved the place. Great otter, easy manifest, 79 degrees in the dead of winter, and very friendly staff. The only con was waiting for the winds to change for a couple hours each day.

Plenty big landing area.
Swoop/high performance lane.
Large packing area.
Two aircraft for when it's busy.
Nice facilities overall.

I thought this place was great. Nice layout, very clean and all that jazz. I'm from a smaller DZ, so for me the layout and facilities were really nice, but it still gave me the small DZ feel. I got a hand up making friends coming in as a jumper visiting for a little over a month, but all the same made good friends with the regulars. Everyone I asked was more than open to either jump with me or invite me on theirs. There is all the right type of people there for a great time, if you want to do something crazy, learn/improve techniques, or just have fun (when do you ever not, right?) there is always someone around to jump with.

I had mixed feelings about the scenery, but if I had to give it thumbs up or down, I'd go with up. In the immediate area, there is a lot of brown, which just isn't my thing, not the DZ's fault of course, that's just how it is. Most mornings though, and sometimes through the day, there is a low layer of fog/haze on the ground that you would never notice when you're in it, but at altitude it hangs low between the large hills/small mountains, and just looks incredible. There were a few perfect days like that where I looked out the door and it gave me that feeling of "I will never question why I love this", which is not something all people can easily find.

I found some of the prices for students/rental gear a little odd, but with different DZ's that's just going to happen. Also I had my own gear, so it was just an in and out observation for me.

The one and only real complaint I had about this place was the port-a-potties. Not theirs specifically, I just really don't like them. Oh well I suppose.

All around, big thumbs up. Great people, great place, great times.

Blue Skies.

Great student gear, great rental gear, very fast climbing aircraft, nice grass landing area, the wind is almost always 5-10 steady, nice packing area.
I do not know what else a skydiver could want in a DZ.
This place has a very talented staff lead by great management.
I would recomend this place to everyone.
Great place to try a 1st skydive or to visit for an experienced skydiver.

Did my first jump today tandem @ Skydive San Diego. Over all it was an amazing experience and my instructor Sean was extremely knowledgeable. The aircraft got us up to altitude quickly and the view on the way down was awesome. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I'm thinking I'll go back in a few weeks and try the AFF.

Good times to be had here. The Manifest ladies were really nice - Sarah and Anna especially. Otter and Caravan were fine, nice covered, padded packing area.

Gorgeous view from altitude and under canopy.

Not too many fun jumpers overall, and a couple people didn't seem to care for the company of people trying to have a good time. Too cool for school I guess.

But definitely a good spot to jump at and most of the staff was great!

I showed up with the shock-value that this might be an awesome dz given the location and the scene. It was all ruined the minute those that greeted (and thats exaggerating) me. Not one person showed interest in asking where i'm from or who I am. All the jumpers there were a bunch of meatheads who apparently visited the gym a little too often and were a bit too cocky for only having 40+ jumps. This would be a great dropzone if they dropped the hubris and started making people feel welcome...I do not agree that there current management gives a damn about their staff and how they respond to paying customers....I was just a number while visiting...and some more coin for their purse...

Nice otters with new padded seats and new seatbelts, extremely well maintained aircraft. Padded packing, food on weekends, great scenery. Only downside is the porta potties. Everyone should come out here. Consisten wind every day

The place was awesome! As a first time diver, and a first timer to the west coast, I was happy with the entire experience. Yea, the facilities were a bit ruggid but the staff was soo chill and the jump was comfortable and smooth. I would def. go back and recommend anyone that is thinkin of going here...go!! Plus, the prices arent so bad. GET the video, worth the extra bejamin. if you're doing it, go for it all...your camera guy will probably be cooler than any of them...Andre, Sean (camera) and Dave get top kudos!!

I enjoyed my first jump at Skydive San Diego. My insrtuctor was friendly and accomodating and made the whole process easy and less stressful. The training and preparation was quick and easy, and the view of the ocean and downtown San Diego was pretty neat. Although I enjoyed my time at Skydive San Diego, some people may be less accepting of the hasty preparation and facilities that weren't exactly neat and tidy (ex. there was no restrooms, only porta-potties; someone had spilt food on the ground and it was not picked up). That said, these things did not bother me. I had a great insturctor who provided me with a great first jump. So if you're looking for an informal, friendly place for your first jump, Skydive San Diego is great. I'm already planning on going back.

I did my first jump this past weekend and the place sure doesn't deserve more than 3 stars.

Some staffs are rude and impatient. while some of the intructors were funny and knowledgable. i don't feel they were doing a good job educating me and my friends about our first jump. for example. i was experiencing great ear discomfort during my jump due to the change in air pressure which i thought the instructor could've warned me and offered some useful tips to alleviate the pain before the jump instead of letting it almost ruin the entire experience.

Skydive San Diego is a great place. I started learning here last week and I am really impressed. I have done tandems at Lodi, Sky dance, and Skydive Atlanta and I have to say that Skydive San Diego is the best.
The Pros of this DZ are many.
The facilities are all clean and pretty new. They have a nice BBQ pit going every day that has decent food at a good price, $2 burgers and more as well as lots of cold drinks. The packing areas (there are 2) are covered and have new padding and plenty of room to spread out. The Gear store has a good selection of basic gear and if they don’t have what you need Bonnie or Justice will make sure you get it. Bonnie is a very cool person to talk to. She is happy to make recommendations and answer any questions that you have. The ladies at manifest are friendly and a get you where you need to be. This is a great place to start learning. The winds are easy, almost constantly out of the west and light. The weather is usually beautiful, sunny and cool. This area is so nice for jumping that the U.S. Navy, Marines and Air force send guys here to learn how to skydive! It’s not uncommon to see S.E.A.L.s training during the week most of the year.
The instructors are all very knowledgeable and professional. They really go out of the way to make you feel safe and ready for your jumps. Jen is the coolest, but all of the AFF instructors have good attitudes and make it pretty fun. Ground school was a good 6 hours of instruction that strongly enforced the basics and gave the knowledge to be safe on your first Jump.
The Aircraft is a brand new Twin Otter! No ratty, old, striped, aircraft here. You get up to altitude quickly and it holds close to 22 jumpers a load. The door has a slider to keep the wind out on the way out and good hand and foot holds on the outside of the fuselage. On the weekend they usually get well over 20 loads in the air!
The view! It is amazing! The DZ is about a mile from Otay Lake and in the foot hills near the border with Mexico. On good days you can even get a good view of the ocean. Of course the weather, again, is always great.
The Cons….
The only real con I have is not that big of a deal. The vibe is kind of busy sometimes. Since this DZ is so close to San Diego it gets a ton of jumpers and spectators on the weekend. Yet most of the fun jumpers are easy to talk to and fun to hang out with.
All in all it’s a great place. I am happy to call it my home DZ.

Since my last review I have continued to jump there and I now have my "A" License. The last review was down because of one person! The staff are friendly and safe. I love every one else at this DZ and highly recommend it.

LAST REVIEW:
I had some issues with some of the staff. As a funjumper with only 11 jumps an instructor let me jump a hop-n-pop from 3500. Once on the ground I was told by staff that I made an illegal jump. When confronted, the instructor denied letting me jump and in fact stated that he told me not to. I was grounded for a few days until I was able to speak to the DZM and clear this misunderstanding. Even after being cleared by management the instructor who let me jump refused to sign my log book.

This place has really come along way! Great grass landing areas, awesome packing tents, great staff, and the Aircraft! Two 300 series otters and a Caravan! I made 11 jumps on Sat and I got there at 11:00 am. There is Freeflying, Flat Flying and swooping. I heard alot about the management change but I must tell you, it seems to have been for the better! My new home DZ!

I'm a newbie-one tandem-so, i'm not at all qualified to compare Skydive SD to other places(haven't been to any). I can say that I was completely confident that all of the staff that I met were highly motivated and proficient. The facilities were great(maybe some food aside from vending machines though). I'm studying the USPA student manual, and just ordered some books on parachuting. I'm planning on getting my A-license over the summer. Due to the great experience I had at Skydive SD, I will entrust the rest of my training to them.
