Skydive San Diego is located next to beautiful Otay Lake reservoir. On the climb to altitude, you will see the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego and Mexico. The winds here are some of the most consistent in the world, usually 4-8 out of the west. Perhaps this is one of the reasons the United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Marine Corps conduct their training here. Block discount tickets are also available. If you're looking to do a tandem jump, you'll find yourself paired with a licensed, professional instructor.  No experience required and after completing the training program, you can expect a 13,000 foot exit followed by a magnificent freefall and parachute flight which looks over the Pacific Ocean and Baja California. Fun jumpers can acquire jump tickets at competitive prices while enjoying the Super Twin Otters and Blackhawk Caravan.

Skydive San Diego is a full-service skydiving facility with multiple training buildings, deluxe packing lofts, a grass landing area, a BBQ deck and patio, and incredible scenery to match! Unlike some outfits that will depart a public airport and land you in a field miles away requiring a van ride back to your friends, Skydive San Diego is set up to takeoff and land right in the same place, where your friends can watch!

There has recently been a change in management, and in my opinion, it is for the better. The new staff is much friendlier and much more people oriented than the old staff. The instructors are great and they know how to make you feel comfortable. The one negative with the management change however, is that a lot of really good instructors left with the old management. Overall it is a great experience though.

4 wonderful things about the new management:

-larger grass landing area
-soft, thick, rubber packing matt
-hop'n'pops from 4,500ft!
-MANAGEMENT, this place has management
now and it shows. Things are running
smoother, and loads are turning quicker.

With 2 super otters and 1 caravan, the loads are a flyin'. I feel like I can train now! Whether it's freefly training, swoop training, RW...this place is fast becoming a TRAINING DROP ZONE.

Oh yeah! You can split your block tickets with anyone, so basically it is $16 per jump.

If you have not been here yet, you truly do not know what you are missing. The new manager has only been there for 2 weeks now, but he is quickly moving forward with many great plans for the drop zone.

The NEW manager truly sees the great potential of this drop zone, and now Skydive San Diego seems to be thriving with untied hands.

I recently completed my AFF and about 25 further jumps here in the less than week. The AFF instructors could not have been more helpful, as well as the packers, manifesters, owner etc.
This place was a great intro to my skydiving career!
Only small problem. If you're gonna spend a day there, take food, there are no facilities....for miles!

san diego has been my home dz for 4 years. i have seen it grow into a world class dz under the prior management. unfortunately, a business deal went bad, and the old owner, who put absolutely nothing into the facility, has taken the operation back.

a mass exodus of fun jumpers has occurred. i am deeply saddened by our loss. you can expect the porta potties to return...

EDITED... DZ Ownership changed due to contract dispute - My friends, loyal to the old DZO, left very upset refusing to go back, because they disagree with the new DZO...

I have updated my review because what I previously wrote is no longer valid.

Andy doesn't own skydive san diego anymore.anything that can be enjoyed of this dropzone is because of Andy's hard work, not the new owner. the new owner prefered skydive san diego to be a tandem factory when he previuosly owned it. The staff that were able to quit and seek work elsewhere speaks for itself, plus the decline in expierence skydivers going there. It's very sad.

Just got back from a great trip to southern California. I was undecided as to which DZ to visit but am very pleased that I ended up at Skydive San Diego. A very friendly DZ where regular jumpers can get coached by world class skydivers. The scenary is fantastic as is the weather.

I understand that there are going to be some managment changes in the next month or so hopefully this will not affect the DZ operation. I can throughly recommend a visit.

Jumped a few days early November 2005. The rolling hills and lake scenery surrounding the dropzone are outstanding. Good landing area and being expanded. Lots of freeflyers of all experience ranges. Friendly culture. Would like to have seen something in food or coffee service (even a machine would be nice)... but a minor quibble... just for the sake of quibbling.

Also, observed very professional instruction taking place and a lot of instructors... seems like it would be a great place for students.

... hope very much to make it back.

I first stumbled across Skydive San Diego in 2001, wasn't really a dz then, i went back this year and was amazed. This english chap called andy( ginger) seems to be running the show and he was extremely helpful throughout as were all the staff. The facilities are good, large packing area, new bunkhouse, rigging loft and good aircfrafts. What i liked was the atmosphere, no people worshipping each other, everyone there to help out and a good selection of jumpers from students to advanced. I would recommend this place also for the location, if you get a down day then san diego is 2 mins, good nitelife, food, beaches, surf,( for a great nite try " The Tavern " bar in Pacific Beack area, its owned by a skydiver whos v cool guy) so you can kill 2 birds with one stone ! The chicks that they get in the summer doing tandems is also worth a look, i mean there's some crackers ! There was one strange thing though, they have this Tandem Cameraman there called " Disco Dave " its worth visiting just to meet him cos he's nuts ! Overall - check it out, you'll be surprised, i was !

I worked at this DZ over the summer of '04, and before I got there, I had my reservations about the place. But, after just a few days there, they were all gone. The owner, Andy Whitcomb has put soooo much into the place, and has very high hopes for the future. I have NEVER felt more welcome, or wanted at a DZ before, and this will always stick with me. I really think that in the next few years, socal will have 3 major DZ's to choose from, and this one will be my choice!

SSD has grown termendously in the past few months. There is now a huge covered experienced packing area and Team Icarus Evolution there every weekend organizing. There is also something going on every Sat. night, whether it is free pizza or a BBQ. The bunkhouse is up and ready and I thought I would never see this but working showers. It is not the same Otay down there so I would encourage everyone to come and check it out.

Very fun place, has all the ammenities that larger DZ's have with very friendly locals. Andy the DZO has made the place incredible with Team Evolution and the team rooms, new packing areas, and awsome atmosphere.

First I will start by saying I am now a go-for (read that gofer) there on the weekends. So I’m sure I may be biased. Andy Whitcomb had made some AWSOME changes to the place. Any complaint by experience jumpers you can find posted about the place has been addressed and quite favorably to us jumpers. Lots of nearby shaded packing, bunkhouse, restrooms/showers, fast turning planes, food truck on the weekends and pretty much anything you could want in a DZ. All run by a very cool guy even if he is an Englishman;-)
So even if I am biased, come check us out and see for yourself. After all its $15 jump tickets and fun times.

I went to skydive san diego for some free fly coaching from Wyat Drewes. He did an amazing job. Really knew his stuff, how to teach, and how to act like a professional. We were able to get a TON of loads in and I learned a lot. Highly reccomended. The dropzone had 2 otters and a caravan. Never had to wait more than 20min for a load (which I needed to get packed up). Good food on the drop zone. Lots of fun jumpers.

I really enjoyed the Saturday I spent at Skydive San Diego. The people (staff & fun jumpers) were very friendly, the plane was fast, and they kept busy so no wait between loads. I had not heard very good things about this dz from folks on this website. However, I can only assume that the place has changed drastically because I really enjoyed myself. They do have a lot of tandems, but I was not booted from any loads and had no trouble getting on. And, lift tickets are only 15$ all summer! Lovely scenery from up top, too!

The landing area is good sized, and there is a section of the landing area designated for hook turns/ hp canopies only. The winds were low and I hear that they are pretty predictable with compare to winds in Perris Valley and Elsinore.

I hope to get back there again soon! :)

A fantastically friendly and helpful DZ. The management really try and make things happen.Has a more parochial feel to it than the other SoCal DZ's. Everybody from the girls in manifest to Andy and the military programme will do what they can to sort you out. Improvements are constantly being made to the facilities and it has the advantage of being that much closer than Perris and Elsinore to the fleshpots of San Diego. Avoid at all costs the US Navy Parachute Team who are a dark and twisted bunch with no alcohol-tolerance! (They're outstanding blokes really...)In summary, SSD has RW, freeflyers, a great canopy school and a really good atmosphere. Go and check it out you really won't be disappointed.

Skydive San Diego is now under the new management of Andy Witcomb. He has brought the DZ to a new level including new portable restrooms instead of the porta potties, new team rooms. He has cleaned the place up and has bought new gear. The place is awesome!! From the beautiful mountain and lake views to the fastest climbing 300 series otters (yes, otters as in 2 300 series otters)to the friendly atmosphere, the place is rocking!! If you have not stopped by lately, do so and check out the new digs and happenings. They even have Icarus Team Evolution there all week and weekends.
Definitely worth checking out again!!!

Just a quick update on whats happening out at Skydive San Diego. They now have a new owner that seems to want to make a big difference in the way the DZ looks and runs. They have added Team Evolution to the mix of instruction which not only give the FUN JUMPER the opportunity for freefly organizing and coaching regularly but a canopy control school as well. There is also regular RW organizing as well. When I spoke to Andy they are going to construct a new packing area in the next few weeks thats huge and add packers in that area to pack the fun jumpers on the weekends. When I ate at the cafe they had a pretty good menu of things to choose from. Oh and the big thing was is that the port o lets are going away and facilites with nice amenities and showers and a bunkhouse is up in the next few weeks. All in all we had a nice time there and plan on being back in the area soon. Terri Lynne

Just got back into skydiving after a 3 year hiatus. Went through the ground school and did a Lvl 4 to get current. Starting jumping the rental gear to get an idea of what I want to buy. Jumped their PD260 Manta (ZP) and their PD2110 (F-111)- OUCH! Very painful opening for this 235lb guy. Other than the opening, this is great place to jump. You can't beat the scenery, the consistent winds, and the super-friendly staff.

Blue Skies,
Al

With over 300 jumps at my home DZ, Perris, I decided to try out the equally distant San Diego DZ. This is a small but rapidly developing opperation.
The weather is much cooler than Perris during the summer with great views in the air, pretty consistant W-E winds, and large landing area. The new twin otter gets you to 13K fast, the staff and local jumpers were friendly, good shaded packing area, and comfortable lounge / patio to hang out on.
The DZ makes its bread and butter on tandem jumps but I had no trouble getting on loads ( did five my first day starting at noon and finishing with a spectacular sunset load ). Food service is very limited so take a lunch or go to nearby restaurants. No liquor licence and no longer any camping or RV. I liked the place and will deffinitely spend more time there.

Skydive San Diego is under new management now. They have antiquated rental gear, and no demo gear. The smallest rig that they have for rental is a old vectra with a 190 main. They're motto says that they are The state-of-the-art skydiving facility of southern California. I guess they think that because instead of electricity they have solar panels. Nothing to do with the skydiving facilities which are antiquated also. I waited 2 hours for a fun jump load. 5 loads of tandems and students ahead of me, and I didn't feel welcome from some of the staff. It is close to San Diego which is a plus, but I think that the extra hours worth of driving to Elsinore or Perris is worth it if you are looking to enjoy your jumps.

I started skydiving here...I was excited and ready to jump. The instructors made me feel comfortable with every task. I am glad that I started the sport and hope to give back to the sport the joys and fun that I have had in the air to others. Having jumped from a couple of different planes I am very happy to jump from the Super Otter. Much nicer than jumping from a Cessna. And thank you to everyone here for all the knowledge and training and keeping it fun.
