Green Rush Boogie Motueka, New ZealandPosted Monday, August 26, 2002 By Brett Parker Skydiving at the ends of the earth, in one of the most beautiful countries in the world...such was the attraction of the first 'Green Rush Boogie' run by Skydive Nelson over 16-18 August 2002. Suffice to say it was a damn fine boogie. How fine was it? Let me count the ways...
- Free pick up and drop off for visiting jumpers to Nelson airport from Motueka township.
- Sparkling weather on Saturday and Sunday, blue skies, low winds. Rather rainy on the Friday, so we started off with some daft hop-and-pops to get the boogie going!
- Over 30 active Kiwi skydivers participated, making up many loads. Several new lady leapers, so it sure wasn't dominated by blokes
- The free-flyers were very much in action, including several instructor jumps. Mark Middleton from NZ Aerosports Ltd brought down some demo Icarus Crossfire canopies which were well-used, and a lot of RW went on - mainly 4 ways, and 6 way chunks (some of which worked!)
- Very well set-up DZ facilities with indoor packing, exit mock-up, TV lounge, deck, picnic tables - and a great kitchen. Sandra the cook served up many fine mochas, lattes, sandwiches and rolls to hungry jumpers. Special mention must be made of the hot double chocolate muffins with a dob of cream cheese in the centre!
- A real honey of a jumpship in the form of a customised converted Fletcher ag-plane (fitted with a Walter turbine engine), kitted out with several windows, large internal sliding door, exit handles and step, carpeted and powder coated inside, GPS with colour moving map display for the pilot - 11 minutes to 12,000 feet with 8 jumpers on board, say no more!
- Good accommodation at a brand new backpackers motel (incl free transport), not even a sleeping bag needed to cushion comatosis after imbibing bulk quantities of beer on Friday and Saturday nights
- Cool 'Green Rush Boogie' t-shirts for every jumper, which were well worn with pride
- Free beer at the boogie's conclusion, consisting of a broad selection of Nelson's finest brews!
Motueka really is a charming spot, with great scenery over the nearby hill ranges and the Pacific. The Abel Tasman National Park is nearby, so the DZ gets a lot of tourists coming for tandems. From 12,000 feet the aerodrome appears as a small square surrounded by orchards, vineyards and houses. A really relaxed, good-natured vibe throughout the area - if you're in NZ I recommend travelling to Motueka for a jump, you won't regret it.
Blue skies! Brett Parker
