100 Way Belgian Record Attempt

Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003

By Kurt Vanderhaegen

From 30 June till 4th July 2003, Leopoldsburg, Belgium, is the place for a record attempt skydiving. You can then find the best 100 skydivers from Belgium at the Sanicole Airport in Leopoldsburg. Initiator behind this unique event is Willy Boeykens, a skydive cameraman, who belongs to the top of the world in his discipline. The organization is cooperation between Belgian civilian skydive clubs en the Belgian army.
Record Formation
After a successful 80-way record in 2001 it 's time to raise the bar again. This time female and male skydivers from all over Belgium want to break the magic triple digit barrier. During one week the skydivers will camp at the airport, where everyday they will get a detailed briefing and do 4 practice jumps. This attempt will be going on a whole week.

SPECTACULAR

Getting 100 skydivers and 3 cameramen in the air, is not a piece of cake. 8 airplanes from in and outside Belgium bring the jumpers in a V-flight formation to a height of 4500 meter (+- 14000 foot). The skydivers then have about 60 seconds time to form the 100-way formation. At and altitude of 1500 meter, all the jumpers fly away from the base to open their parachutes in a save way. Seen from the ground it looks like the formation is exploding, which guarantees a spectacular view from the ground.

A 100-way formation has a diameter of about 40-50 meters. It looks like a big plate that falls from the air and is clearly visible from the ground. Because these attempts are planned during the first week of the summer holidays, this spectacular event will surely be a crowd pleaser.

TRADITION

Belgium has a rich tradition in skydiving: in 1987 and 1992 the world record was already set in Koksijde, at the Belgian coast. The Belgian military skydiving team is already world champion for the 5th time. In the top 10 of skydiving cameramen in the world, a separate discipline, you find 2 Belgians who cover all major record jumps in the world.

In Europe there are at this moment only 3 countries who broke this national 100 way record: France, Switzerland and since last summer the United Kingdom. That makes this attempt for Belgium rather extraordinary and a unique sport happening in Europe.
