Item: BASE 66
By: Jevto Dedijer  (192 Hits)

Description:
BASE 66 is the true, nerve-wracking account of three young skydivers and their quest for membership in the most select extreme sports club on earth: The BASE club. In order to become a full-fledged member, Jevto Dedijer, Bernard Poirier, and Scott Elder had to parachute from the top of a building, an antenna tower, a bridge and a cliff, and survive to tell the story—a feat only some 800 adrenaline addicted people have succeeded in doing.

In BASE 66, Jevto Dedijer tells the tale of his hunger for the ultimate adrenaline rush. He and his companions shared several near death experiences while traveling across Europe with their parachutes and beer in Bernard’s dented Renault 4.

They were pioneers in a sport so dangerous that several of their fellow BASE jumpers died in action.

Amazing book
Rated by: AndrewKarnowski (more about me) on 2006-10-06 00:00:00 (user reviews) Review ID:1669

Pros: Enthralling tale, very captivating and drescriptive
Cons: not being able to put the book down until 5am the morning after I got it.

I have yet to make my first BASE jump... but this book was amazing. The detailed accounts of Jevto's experiences dragged me in. I couldn't put the book down, and I most definatlly finished it the same night that I got it.

Describes the way a jumper earns his BASE-number
Rated by: Zettel (more about me) on 2005-11-12 00:00:00 (user reviews) Review ID:1426

Pros: thrilling, straightforward, and not vain at all
Cons: too short

This book was published in english weeks before I made my first BASE-jumps. What a valuable coincidence! I really went nuts about this book and the characters described in it. In some way this book ist "quiet": no vanity fair, no heroes, no snobbish attitudes. That, I actually enjoyed very much. It was highly interesting for me to read about the beginnings of BASE-jumping, the fear, the way things may go... And besides all that it's an entertaining novel (even if the characters are real) about friendship. All in all the subtitle describes it very well: "A story about fear, fun and freefall". I will read it again... and again. Thank you Jevto! It meant a lot to me. This is a thrilling reading for skydivers, BASE-jumpers and even curious pedestrians. Read it!
