Item: The Parachute and Its Pilot
By: Brian Germain  (393 Hits)

Description:
As the title suggests, there is a bi-fold focus of subject matter. The first part is about parachutes and flight techniques, everything right from the beginning up through competition approaches.

The second part is about the psychology of flight; from fear response and ego issues through visualization.

The Parachute and its Pilot is the singular resource for canopy flight information. Whether you are a new jumper looking for further your education or an expert canopy pilot seeking tips on advancing your techniques, this book has something for you. The book is jam-packed with information compiled over 18 years of skydiving experience, and offers technical yet very straight-forward explanations of ram air parachute flight. Written by one of the industry's leading parachute designers, The Parachute and its Pilot is a must-have handbook for every skydiver.

you think you know about canopies til you read this
Rated by: 377 (more about me) on 2008-04-03 23:58:27 (user reviews) Review ID:1967

Pros: Chock-full of useful even essential information
Cons: a bit pricey but worth it

Brian is a strange hybrid in that he is kind of a psychologist at heart, but also a self taught aero engineer who is obsessed with canopy design and flight analysis. This book ROCKS! Brian writes very clearly and the book has many helpful illustrations. When you are finished you will have a whole new outlook on how canopies work and how to fly them. Many well accepted teachings about canopy flight are actually wrong. For example if you have turned too low and are going to impact hard in a banked attitude in asecond or two, many say you should level the canopy. That is bad advice and Brian will tell you why. This dude understands lift, drag, statics, dynamics and vectors better than many degreed engineers. He puts it all to work for you in the book. For all Brian's teachings about how to fly and land safely, you'd think he'd be injury free....well HARDLY. Brian has had his bones broken many many times doing extreme things under a canopy. I guess he just cannot practice what he preaches. Buy the book, it will make you a better canopy pilot and it might even save your life.

Took away the mystery and increased my enjoyment of flight
Rated by: SlashDog (more about me) on 2006-08-01 00:00:00 (user reviews) Review ID:1611

Pros: Easy read, will make you a better canopy pilot!
Cons: Can't jump with it.

Since reading this work, I understand what I can and can't do under canopy, so I am free to enjoy the process of learning to fly. I've started feeling more in control of my approaches and landings. My coach has commented that I have made recent leaps in my canopy contol and that I am now "flying the canopy all the way down to the ground" even in my recent first crosswind. Great book!

Pros: explains all
Cons: none

This is a great read for those with experience or not. Everone who plans on flying a high speed parachute should read every last page. Good job Brian.
