Great read to get yourself started!
Rated by: debussyschild (more about me) on 2008-09-28 07:17:59 (user reviews) Review ID:2075

Pros: A wealth of information for the beginner, very in depth
Cons: Possibly a little outdated

I'm a beginner with not one jump under my belt as of the time of this review (but that will change this coming weekend!!) and I found to book to be extremely helpful and informative. The best part is the description of the sport canopy with all of the components labeled in a diagram. The chute is a difficult but probably the most important part of sky diving with which one must to become THOROUGHLY acquainted. This book helps a lot with that to get yourself a rough idea before you begin your actual AFF in-field training.

Great for a headstart and reference
Rated by: denete (more about me) on 2007-04-08 00:00:00 (user reviews) Review ID:1777

Pros: Hits almost every aspect of the sport
Cons: none

I read the book, and then showed up for my AFF coursework. That night, the guys thought I was lying about never having jumped before. It is fairly complete and definitely a must-have for the reference shelf.

Made me feel ver prepared for AFF
Rated by: Chris-Ottawa (more about me) on 2006-05-04 00:00:00 (user reviews) Review ID:1539

Pros: EVERYTHING you need to know and then some
Cons: Your Jump master may wish you knew less, trust your JM, not the book

First, I'd like to justify my "Cons" comment. I've learnt that not all JM's want a well informed student. And this is not the JM's fault, sometimes knowing too much too soon is very bad. I don't mean not to trust what the book says, but listen to your JM. If he tells you something that conflicts with the book, believe him/her. So I did a tandem in October 2005, got hooked instantly. Decided I wanted to get into skydiving and I did. Over the winter I read this book 3 times in preparation for my courses in the spring. My Solo course was basically everything I covered in this book. My JM was showing pictures of line overs, end cell closures, streamers, etc, he was impressed that I knew exactly what they were and what to do to get out of them. I was mistakenly shipped 2 copies of the book for the price of one, so I brought one to the DZ and shared it with the owners. They really though it was great and it now lives at the DZ for anyone to read. If you are going to spend any money on skydiving, I highly recommend this book before you do. BUY IT, nuff said! (I currently have 1 tandem, 3 IAD jumps, and 3 PFF jumps, see you at the DZ!) Chris
