I will post some more detailed guidelines for posting to this forum. In the meantime, it seems that some people are starting to look at this forum as a place to advertise. It is not. Thge Forum Rules apply here the same as anywhere else.
The purpose of this forum is to discuss "skydiving events and boogies" We will be much more diligent in removing advertising from here in the future. We will also remove duplicate and unnecessary spamming. Please don't abuse this forum and risk loosing your posting privileges.
The following is not a "skydiving event", it's a special that you're advertising:
$15 Thursdays at Skydive Purupatoo
This applies to the Events Calendar as well. If you want to advertise special offers at your DZ feel free to check out the advertising options on this site.

I completely understand where you are coming from on this, but I still have a question on this. Even in the example you gave, doesn't this serve as a type of service to the jumping public by letting them who has what going on, that might save them some deniro? I know it is a little bit of a grey area, and I am not suggesting that the same apply to gear, etc. but discounted jump days, weekends, etc. would maybe seem to have a little bit of a leash because of the afore mentioned service. It's just a thought.
As always, your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.
I agree with you Jeff.If you are telling people about an event you are doing it to get people to come.Not to say hey look at what we are doing an we don't want you here.Just about everything posted here is advertising in some form.I don't see a difference in who is telling you about something a DZO or a jumper and I don't think you can regulate this.My message board on RoamingDZ.com was set up just for the purpose of spreading the word of what is going on in the Southeast.But....Opps....I guess that would be advertising and should be deleted

I guess any advertiser could try to make this point. If someone has a July Sale of gear. Is it a "service to the public" to let them know about cheaper gear? It's advertising. There are advertising options available on Dropzone.com. Feel free to use those.

so in order for me to find out about a dropzone having a special event that involves lower cost jump tickets, they need to spend money to advertise here? what if the dropzone doesnt have that kind of money to spend?
on the other hand, i understand you are offering this site up for free to us and it has a lot of valuable information. but at the same time, you seem to have enough companies that see much larger profits than smaller dropzones, especially clubs that just barely turn enough profit to keep the business running.

The feeling I'm getting is HH is trying to keep the repetitive annoying "e-mail" list type postings from being posted.
The ones with the worthless random information that no one cares about unless they jump at that DZ. If they jump at that DZ, then they're most likely on their e-mail list so it doesn't matter. Its the kind of thing that wouldn't draw a jumper from elsewhere like a boogie.
For instance, I don't care you're cooking at the end of the day on saturday, my DZ does that too, I don't care if you have $5 jumps, if I jumped at or near that DZ I'd know that already, the fact that you're 3 states over means I'm not going and don't care.
My point is, for the folks that would benifit from that information, they're either at or near that DZ and most likely know already without cluttering up the forums here.

And this is a strange concept to you? In order for you to find out your local Macy's is having a cosmetics sale (I know you like those!) they have to spend money as well.

I hate to sound like a lawyer, but I think its necessary to define the difference between advertising and discussion meant for this forum. Just about every post currently in here could be considered advertising.
If your nearby DZ is getting a turbine for the weekend after years of cessnahood, and you start a thread about it?
I just don't understand how "$15 Thursdays" is not an event, and a boogie with $15 jumps is.

Indeed. But if they get it every week on a Wednesday for the rest of the year, then it's hardly an event, then it's just a regular occurrence.

Because the one is a boogie and the other one is a Thursday. It has nothing to do with the $15. If the $15 becomes the "event", then you're advertising a special.
The idea is simple. I'd like people to use this area to tell us about and discuss "major" skydiving events (as it says in the forum description). The intention was not to create a place where DZs can post about every promotional activity that they're doing by passing it off as an "event". It's not.

I think it should be pretty clear by now seeing as there's only one type of post that I've commented on so far. We've been deliberately lenient in this forum to allow as much of this information to pass though. Now I've made a request, please understand and honor it or I will start looking at alternatives to keep this forum in line with what I had in mind. My guess is you'll end up with less posting freedom than you have now... that's almost inevitably what happens.

I think advertising is much like pornography - difficult to define, but I know it when I see it.
Maybe start a thread called "Skydive and Advertise" or something? I am sure that most of the guys and girls jumping would like to know of special deals or offers week to week. It costs to have a site and that is fair enough so maybe a small fee or similar for anything involving a $ symbol in a post??? ;) -M.

I think you should just let people post what they want about events, boogies, specials, etc. This is a forum and as long as it has something to do with the topic.. events....it should be allowed on the page... even if it is just friends getting together to jump at X DZ on Y day. just my 2 cents. I agree 100% with the head honcho
as the bandwidth expenses involved to keep this site running must be huge. so if someone is to make money out of this site then they should be willing to help out the site financially and advertise on it.
I'm sure its more about cost of running the site then HH thinking since he has put 10 billion hours into the site and probably had the site save many lives then he thinks he should earn some green stuff
