'Splicing' Spectra
Can't Post
Hi
If you wanted to splice (fingertrap) a length of spectra (1000) into an existing length of line, how long would you make the overlap, to retain a reasonable proportion of the original strength? I presume a bar tack (at each end of the overlap?) would be needed for security?
If you just fingertrap the outer line on the inner one, you'll leave the frayed edges of the outer line visible, which is not aesthetically pleasing nor practical.
For non-skydiving purposes I just usually make a fingertrapped loop on each lengh of line and interlock the loops. For any skydiving application you really want a full length of line.
For an eye or loop the buried measurement of line is aprox 3" to maintain the strength. For a straight splice like at the cascade it is aprox 6". Hope that is what you are looking for. (These are rough numbers based on your question)
