Gear checks Can't Post

Another thread reminded me of a funny story with an important point.

I was at a well known, legal base site, watching this dude from Paraguay getting ready to exit.
He looked over his right shoulder and asked the guy standing behind him for a final gear check.

The guy started to fumble around, and then asked "is that a velcro or a pin rig?"

The Paraguayan's confidence seemed a bit shaken. He turned to me and asked me to check his gear instead.

Everything looked in order and off he went, no troubles.

Whether it's Skydiving or BASE, don't assume that the guy next to you is qualified to give you a gear check, and don't be afraid to admit that you aren't familiar with someone else's gear.

Even if you are afraid to admit, DO. When someone asks for a gear check they are putting their life in you hands.

I try not to go to strangers for gear checks. If I don't know them, I don't know what they probably know about gear or how concerned they are about helping me stay alive.

Of course, so far I've only ever jumped at my home DZ.
