What do people think about these? I talked to one guy who showed me how his worked and it looked like you could open the box and take the camera out, ie the camera is not screwed down. Does this cause shake?
I've never had that problem. Make sure you use the foam padding that comes with it. I also added some additional padding. As long as you close it tightly you shouldn't have the problem. Next helmet I buy is going to be a top mount for both my video and stills because I worry about a riser strike and/or entanglement.
I have about 250 jumps with a bonehead d-box using a SONY trv-11 and trv-17 camera. There are a few pros and cons I have found... If the pads are cut right, and the strap is tight, there is no camera shake....
Pro's No need to screw the camera to the helmet. Easy to remove/replace Very secure You dont get any 'digital dropout' from the wind blast during the exit
Con's You can not use the 'fader' button unless you drill a hole in the box. If the pads arent cut right, even the slightest bump to the top cover will activate the 'zoom' You cant use the viewfinder unless you cut a hole in the top cover. If you are shooting at night and using super night shot, the box will block the IR source.
remember, this is with a trv style camera, a pc style box is a bit different
