Post Polio Syndrome Lurks Can't Post

Pre vaccine, had polio?
Some 50-60% of childhood polio victims relapse. No joy.
Poliomyelitis has no cure. At the peak of its devastation USA 1952, Jonas Salk introduced a vaccine to prevent it.
Folks like me and SCR 216 were hit pre-Salk. Now old post-polio old farts get a replay. Called Post-Polio-Syndrome, it awards bad news. Meaning if you had it, recurrence is a coin-toss. Exercise digs your hole deeper; you get feeble. That's all I know.

Yes, Pat, it can be devastating. Many who went through it, and recovered, never thought it would rear its ugly head again, but those who had polio just don't have the reserves. The way it was explained to me, years ago, is that Polio screws with your nerves, and if those nerves recover, you don't have the "reserves" They are fatigued, so to speak. So when you get older and your nerves age, weakness occurs, and will especially affect muscles originally affected by the disease itself.

mrowc6 had it as a child, but, so far, has dodged any of the ricocheting bullets.

Oct 21, 1955 my mom & dad were married. She just turned 19. He would be 24 a few days later.
2 weeks later she started to experience burning in her legs, while they were dyeing dad's Air Force fatigues 'red' so she could go deer hunting with him.
Nov. 10, 1955, he carried her into University WI. Hospital. She was in an iron lung for 6 months.
A few months later the vaccine was available to the public.
She never walked again. "They" said she would never live beyond the age of 30.
10 children later ( I am eldest ) & 48 years in a wheel chair...she was affected by Post Polio Syndrome & died on Mother's Day 2003.
She was 66 years old !

I was born in 1957 and knew people just a few years older than me that had Polio. I was always so thankful. That the vaccine was available when I came along.

In a leadership class at work about 3 weeks ago the teacher asked who was familar with Jonas Salk. I was the only person in the room that knew what he had done. How quickly we forget.
