Rush to jump with camera Can't Post

Hey Ladies and Gents!

I was having multiple discussion over the summer with some people that are really rushing to jump with a camera.

My main drop zone doesn't let you jump with a camera before 200 jumps, and I believe I was told that this is a USPA thing (if that is wrong let me know). But I saw other drop zone that doesn't really care.

I have a hard time believing that is the correct thing to do (let a newbie jump with a camera). Am I the only one that has that train of thoughts?

And what is with the big rush of jumping with a camera?

It's not. DSE has a list of incidents that have resulted in large part from new jumpers using small format cameras. Such incidents range from forgetting a chest strap to serious injuries - and death.

It allows people to post YouTube videos of their jumps. The kind way to think of this is that they want to "spread the experience" around so other people can see it. There are less kind ways to describe that desire.

One of the reasons for this is the availability of small format cameras specifically targeted at skydivers. Go to a display at any electronics store - the GoPro kiosk will probably have a video playing showing skydiving, ground launching or BASE jumping (among other sports.) New skydivers can be tempted to think "look how easy that is! And everyone seems to be doing it. Maybe it won't be a big deal if I take it up to record my jump. And it might help me be a better skydiver. Yeah, that's the ticket."

Any chance I could have these DSE Report linked? Could use that as a heavy argument against it.

But yeah I get what you mean I saw the display in a few shops and I always rolled my eyes at them! Crazy

They'd be better off jumping with more experienced jumpers who have cameras - the person wiithout the camera is in all the footage Smile and it will highlight all the many things they're doing badly....

It's locked at the top of the camera forum.

Exactly! Most of them have barely their A so seeing the sky and the ground coming up is not a great video!

Thanks for the Report !

This is a huge factor.

When I had about 70 jumps the camera of choice for skydiving was the Sony PC101 - I was a student at the time. They were about 1000 in the shops... not counting the cost of a camera helmet and lens.

That's a significant cost and investment, and I always saw it as a grand I could rather spend on jumps.
A go pro is about $150... people spend that in a weekend jumping.
