DZ's near Vancouver Can't Post

Hi all,

I'll be in Vancouver now and then for a couple of days in the near future.
I've seen that there are a couple of DZ's near the city. Which one would be the most fun for freeflyers?

Thanks :)

There is two dropzones I know of that are close enough that you can easily get there by car.. Pitt Meadows, and Abbortsford. Both dropzones are OK. Not sure about the planes at Pitt Meadows this year, but they had a caravan and 2 Cessna's last year. Abbortsford has a pretty darn fast Porter flying most loads.

That said, while Pitt is a very fun dropzone, if the caravan isn't flying, and they only have the cessna's, then due to the amount of tandems they turn, the wait times between loads can be pretty substantial in my experience. I never really took issue with that, but this is not the same for everyone.

I'd call ahead to Pitt and ask what they have flying that day, and based on that take the 45min drive to Pitt, or the hour and 15 min to Abbortford.

Pitt is doable with public transport as well, but that is quite the undertaking..

As far as a wind tunnel, less than 2 hours south in Seattle there is a 14' recirc tunnel that is very nice. Also for jumping Snohomish is just over an hour south. Many weekends in the summer they are running 2 caravans compared to 1 normally flying. If you want to drive a bit more Skydive Kapowsin is usually running an Otter or a Grand Caravan as well.

In my experience, the costs are noticeable less to jump at Snohomish or Kapowsin compared to the Canada DZ options. Throwing ot out there as more options for you to consider. Different places different vibes, all fun opportunities to play in the air.

Last time I talked with Kat, they purchased land near the River Rock Casino/Skytrain Station and were just trying to raise $8 million.

On a more practical note, the portable tunnel had just returned from spending the winter in the Bahamas and they were busy setting it up on Tilbury Island - same place they operated last summer.

To drive to Tilbury Island, drive out of Vancouver International Airport. When you hit the highway, turn right towards the Peace Arch border crossing point - to the USA. When you emerge from the highway tunnel, take the first off-ramp and turn left/east. There are only two exits to Tilbury Island, and the wind tunnel is between the two.

Sunday was cloudy - a mixture of stratus with a few small cumulous - and I only heard Pitt's Cessna 205 climbing over my house.

Weekdays, take the Sytrain to Braid Station and the 791 bus to the corner of Harris and Ford Roads in Pitt Meadows. Hint: the only (white clapboard) church in Pitt Meadows is on that corner. If you phone Pacific Skydivers, they will probably send a van to pick you up at the church. If not, it is a pleasant 2 kilometer walk to Pitt Meadows Airport.

Weekends, public transit is more complicated: Skytrain to Lougheed Station, 97 B bus to Coquitlam Mall, and then the 701 bus to Pitt Meadows church.

I am off Monday afternoon, if you want a guide.
