L braket vs d-Box Can't Post

Mindwarp is in the mail and i was wondering once i get into phtotography which is better to have? I think it's obvious the D-box but i'm wondering if it's worth the cash when i could pay $50 for an L braket which basically does the same thing...hold the cameraTongue

is it better to go the cheaper route or pay the extra $100 for a D-box?

Take alook at the scratches on the outside of some of the Dboxes at the DZ some time. They both have their pluses, if i was doing tandem videos an L bracket would save a lot of time.

I'll have to agree with you there. I'm convinced that the price of a "box" is small relative to replacing the camera.

I've always thought that the protection was only good for riser strikes, until I was told about the lense assembly getting taken out because of the wide angle lense getting struck in freefall.Shocked

Then I've also been told about tape fluttering due to air coming into the camera (more on old style 8 and Hi8 though). And how even a condom was minimal.

Yea but I have jumped with a L bracket for a year now and I really like it.. I now have a RAWA that has a fixed DBox.. But I still have my other helmet because I can change the angle anyway I want.. I can even film backwards easily while I am ono the ride up.. SOme L brackets arent like that though.. I know that the manufactures of I think the Velocity helmets make really good versitile L brackets that let you change angles even to backwards.. All my base buddies always use my L Bracket helmet to film their openings on a local antena, and when jumping new canopies I use it to view the parts of opening that I dont regularily see.. Good video once you do it a few times and get the angle perfect...

Re: [adamjenner] L braket vs d-Box [In reply to] Can't Post

My first camera helmet was a Mindwarp with a D-box (PC-5). My second is an Optik with an L-bracket. I didn't like the D-Box becuase it didn't mount flush with the Mindwarp, and has slight convex curvature on the mounting side. I felt like my camera was way out there on the side. The L bracket is definately less bulky and my camera doesn't stick out as far. I also didn't like the D-Box becuase it was a hassle to get into the camera functions or review a jump. It's nice with the L-bracket, all I have to do is flip the screen open or just look into the viewfinder, especially nice for doing tandem videos. And after a couple of well abused years on my PC-5, i knocked it off a 3 foot gear rack and broke it. It was on the L-bracket, whereas it probably would have survived in the D-box. I still like the L-bracket better, just have to be more protective of handling it. I've never had a riser stike my camera, so I haven't had any issues with that.

just my experience...
peace

Yeah cuz I know one jumper at our DZ who has a Dbox on his mindwarp and whenever he opens he turns his head slightly to avoid riser strike just in case I guess.

Lew - do you use a camera condom with that L-bracket ? Just curious.

Yeah I shelled out for the extra warranty too but it's pretty much useless.

"The warranty does not cover equipment which is misused, .... or damaged as a result of accident, water, grit, impact or lack of propper care."

rich.

i think my warranty covers more than that. They already swapped the camera after we borke one of the ends of a cam-eye off in it and couldn't get it out, they just gave us a new one, on the spot. can't beat that.

And our warranty specifically allows coverage from water or moisture. It does not allow for "cosmetic" damage. It does include cleaning and alignments.

Lots and lots....retailers love selling customers these warranties on electronics because they make a ton of money on warranties. Chains do their own warranties as well as manufacturers. They might lose money on skydiving videographers but they more than make it up on the general public. Generally I never buy these things but based on the experiences of many camerajumpers I might reconsider whenever I buy a new camcorder.

I'm not Lew - she's far better looking than I am. We don't know the exact name of the warranty company, but they provide the warranties for both Best Buy and Ultimate Electronics. The warranty paperwork has a toll-free number you can call to find the nearest service center or drop-off for carry-in service. They also do in-home plans on some things (like our televisions), that are transferrable (if you sell the TV), and go wherever your house goes (our house has wheels).
